DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the Director of Special Services, plans, organizes, directs, and accomplishes goals and objectives of the Health Services Program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students, including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation
- Works cooperatively with other School Assessment Team members to assess health needs related to learning, and determine appropriate educational plan
- Develops and updates health care plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day
- Establishes and manages health screening programs according to state mandates and guidelines
- Supervises/provides screening and follow up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical deficits
- Accesses student population for compliance with immunization and CHDP laws
- Supervises administration of medication procedures
- Provides adequate care for ill and injured children
- Provides student and parent health counseling
- Develops specialized and standardized procedures as needed for special needs students
- Conducts risk assessments for tuberculosis
- Conducts staff in-service on select health topics and related issues, i.e., abuse reporting, recognition of communicable disease and appropriate action
- Complies with law regarding suspected child abuse
- Serves as a resource to teachers for health instruction, provides health education resource materials for classroom teachers, and provides student instruction of selected health topics and issues
- Recommends modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations due to a health deficit
- Provides growth and development instruction at grades 5 and 6 with communicable disease at grade 6
- Instructs CPR/MFA/ER Preparedness classes for district personnel
- Presents parent information meetings as indicated, i.e., growth and development, child abuse prevention, substance abuse
- Actively participates as a member of school(s) disaster preparedness team
- Maintains accurate medical records to ensure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions
- Maintains and submits data for state annual reports and district monthly reports (Special Education, immunization, CHDP, scoliosis, etc.)
- Maintains timely communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students
- Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community
- Maintains and encourages confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues
- Participates as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellness
- Attends health services staff meetings
- Skill to make independent, immediate decisions
- Ability to remain calm in an emergency situation
- Capability to demonstrate respect for children, teenagers, and adults
- Competence to accurately record, transfer, and relate information
- Ability to follow directions and procedures
- Skill to demonstrate active and reflective listening skills
- Capability to present information in an organized manner
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Special Services and/or Assistant Superintendent
CREDENTIAL/LICENSE:
- Valid California registered nurse license and credential authorizing school nurse services in grade level K- 12
- Valid California Driver License
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree, including all courses to meet credential requirements

These are District Office based positions assigned to various school sites as needed. Our School Nurses work 6.5 hours per day, 184 days per year. We operate on a modified traditional schedule, with school beginning in August and ending the end of May.
Credit for a maximum of 20 years of nursing experience will be granted.
