Jurupa Unified School District CROSSING GUARD DEFINITION Under general supervision, provides for the safety of students crossing designated roadways by escorting students across such roadways in an efficient manner. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS · Observes traffic flow, watching for breaks, in order to effectively halt traffic. · Observes that all vehicles appear to be reducing speed in preparation to stop. · After traffic is halted, safely escorts children across the roadway until all children have reached a place of safety from traffic and returns to crossing post. · Informs school children of proper safety methods and assures that they observe all safety precautions. · When necessary, reports those students who fail to cooperate to school principal or other appropriate authority. · Observes and submits essential evidence (characteristics of automobile, driver, etc.) to proper authorities when motorists violate school crossing regulations. · Notifies or requests someone to notify proper authorities in emergency situations. · Observes and reports actions of suspicious characters at or near the crossing locations. · May be required to keep simple records and reports relative to activities, incidents, etc. at or near assigned crossing guard location. · Ability to work flexible hours. · Ability to wear and carry appropriate clothing and equipment. · Work in a wide variety of weather conditions. · Walk and/or stand up to the end of the shift period · First Aid certified OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS · Performs other related duties as assigned. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Safety practices. Experience working with school age children Ability to: Read, understand and follow oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and parents. Make accurate observations from a distance; Communicate effectively; Stoop, kneel, bend, and walk (at times over uneven ground, or at a highly accelerated pace); Stand and/or walk for sustained periods of time; Climb slopes, stairs, steps and ramps; May lift and carry light to medium-weight objects; Deal with hostile, emotional, ill or angry persons in an effective manner; Maintain regular, steady attendance.
