Position Description:
Brawerman Elementary School West seeks an innovative, dynamic, and experienced Library and Digital Literacy Specialist who will support our school’s mission of providing an unparalleled educational experience rooted in Jewish values – inspiring innovative thinking, empowering responsible leadership, and honoring individuality within a nurturing community. The ideal candidate inspires a love of reading, fosters students' critical thinking skills, and empowers students to be capable researchers and ethical users of information. The candidate will demonstrate strong organization and planning skills and an ability to create a warm and inviting library environment. Brawerman’s Library Specialist works collaboratively with classroom teachers and incorporates a diverse lens when managing the library collection and displays as well as in curriculum and event planning. The Library Specialist will be responsible for developing and teaching lessons, including on digital citizenship and research from a variety of sources, as well as maintaining all aspects of the library including: extending book collections, cataloging and processing resources purchased, instituting effective circulation and retrieval systems, and maintaining library databases. This position is at our West Campus located at 11661 W. Olympic Blvd. in Los Angeles.


About Brawerman:
Brawerman Elementary School of Wilshire Boulevard Temple is a Reform Jewish day school (Kindergarten to Grade 6) with two campuses. The original West campus was founded in 1999 in a modern facility located in West Los Angeles. The East campus opened in fall 2011 in the heart of Los Angeles’ Koreatown, adjacent to the historic Wilshire Boulevard Temple sanctuary. We are a tight-knit community with a high level of collaboration among the faculty and an active parent body. Responsibilities:

 

  • Implement a comprehensive information literacy curriculum
  • Design and teach integrated research skills 
  • Collaborate with teachers and develop curriculum using 21st century skills that incorporate the use of information literacy and technology
  • Understand the differing needs of elementary-aged students
  • Promote a lifelong love of reading and a robust reading culture
  • Ensure the library collection represents a diverse and multicultural range of authors and topics
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and skillful researchers
  • Deliver digital citizenship and media literacy instruction to all grade levels and assist teachers in fostering these practices in their classroom
  • Provide access to digital information resources for the entire learning community
  • Exhibit excellent leadership and management skills within the classroom 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Develop and maintain the library curriculum and scope and sequence
  • Oversee the maintenance of the Elementary School library’s collection 
  • Play an active role in special events such as Reading Day, book fairs, author visits, Jewish holidays, and others
  • Assist with supervisory tasks and other duties as assigned
  • Create and maintain a joyful, vibrant, organized, and welcoming environment

Qualifications:

 

  • A minimum of a college bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in Library/Information Sciences is preferred
  • Master’s in Education and/or K-12 Teacher Librarian Credential (preferred)
  • Relevant teaching experience from independent, public, private, or charter schools
  • Minimum of 2 years experience
  • Knowledge of relevant technology

Compensation:

 

  • $60,000 to $85,000 based on experience and qualifications
  • Salary is based on employment from mid-August 2023 to mid-June 2024 paid over twelve months
