PRINCIPAL – ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DEFINITION
Under general direction of the Superintendent, is responsible to administer, coordinate, and provide leadership to all programs, services, and operations of an elementary school.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Personnel in this class report to the Superintendent and are responsible for overall operation of an elementary school.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides leadership to the staff in determining objectives and identifying school needs as the basis for developing long and short range plans for the school of assignment; provides leadership in developing and directing innovating educational programs designed to meet the needs of the pupils and the community; interprets and implements the District-approved curriculum program in the light of individual school needs; establishes an effective school administrative organization with clear lines of responsibility and with the necessary delegation of authority; assigns, supervises, and evaluates the performance of all school personnel in accordance with the District’s adopted uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessment, recommends appropriate action in cases of sub-standard performances, and identifies and encourages individual teachers with leadership potential; makes periodic appraisals of pupil progress; develops school plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline, and conduct of students as established in District procedures; plans, coordinates, and evaluates the total program of pupil services, including guidance and counseling; plans, supervises, and directs the business operation of the school in accordance with District policies and procedures; makes plans for the most effective use of curriculum materials, instructional supplies, equipment, building facilities, and school grounds; carries out a program of community relations as a means of interpreting and furthering the school program through community organizations; plans, coordinates, and reviews the work of resource teachers and instructional consultants assigned to assist teachers in the instructional program; maintains a commitment to ongoing growth in self and others, supporting and participating in District and site professional growth programs; manages certificated contracts at site level; serves on committees and performs other duties as directed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
Valid California Administrative Credential;
Valid teaching credential.
Experience:
Successful teaching experience and leadership experience at the elementary school level. California School Leadership Academy participation is desirable.

Success with closing the achievement gap of at-risk student groups.
