Requirements / Qualifications

THE POSITION: Under direction of the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the Communications Specialist performs a variety of specialized duties for the purpose of sharing information and shaping a comprehensive image of ACOE to key stakeholders. These objectives are accomplished by: the research, preparation, composition, design, writing, editing and distribution of a variety of materials in print, video and/or electronic format; providing assistance to departments in implementing effective communication plans; developing and maintaining a specialized knowledge base and skill set relevant to assigned communicating duties, including, but not limited to, website structure, social media platforms, site/department communication strategies, and evolving trends in the communication world; support objectives including, public relations efforts, media relations, strategic communication plans and marketing initiatives, internal communications, community outreach initiatives, and stakeholder engagement activities that build support and understanding for the ACOE’s schools, programs, and initiatives. This Specialist will work closely with the Director to ensure consistency and quality across ACOE communications and adherence to the agency’s strategic communication goals and priorities, and responds to inquiries from the public. This job reports to Assigned Administrator.

LOCATION: 313 W. Winton Ave. Hayward, CA 94544 TYPICAL DUTIES: Contributes to the planning, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive communications program, using a variety of media and techniques, including public information, media relations, publications, video, social media, marketing, and web site content. Provides insight and guidance to Director of Communication and staff on effective communication and community engagement strategies, tactics and best practices. Prepares written and multimedia content for social media platforms, District website, newsletters, internal platforms, television and other mediums as assigned. Independently composes and disseminates news releases, opinion pieces, informational materials, social media content concerning Board and ACOE policies and actions, educational programs and activities, speeches, and general information about ACOE. Assists the Director with news media relations by logging and responding to media inquiries, maintaining updated media databases, maintaining strong working relationships with reporters and editors, writing and disseminating news releases, seeking story opportunities, and proactively contacting press. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least five years of professional or technical experience specializing in writing, editing, and proofing articles, pamphlets, news releases, opinion pieces, and materials for use by the press, radio and television; or equivalent training, education, and experience. Previous experience working in a K-12 public education communications function is highly desirable. Bachelor's degree with major course work in Public Relations, Communication, Marketing or a related field. Equivalency: Any combination of education/experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in communication, public relations, marketing or a related field and five years’ experience in journalism, public relations, or another communication-related field. Previous experience working in a K-12 public education communications function is highly desirable.
