Description

Under supervision of principal, the facilitator will be an integral link that helps the parents to connect the language and skills learned at general/academic ESL classes to their children’s instructional program.  He/she will provide direct assistance to parents on how to tutor students in English language homework.  The facilitator will work within the parent center modeling exemplary tutorial procedures and supporting parents in their tutoring efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that might be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Advocate the importance of parental tutoring in English
  • Encourage parents to tutor students at home/school
  • Model strategies to assist children in their literacy development
  • Offer mini courses on essential steps for tutoring students
  • Offer parents specific advice on homework support
  • Communicate with the Adult ESL Instructor so that classes are aligned with the school curriculum as much as possible
  • Under supervision organize and run the parent tutorial program
  • Show parents how to take the information learned within ESL classes and use it in the tutoring of students
  • Communicate parent suggestions and/or tutorial needs to school staff and or ESL staff
  • Maintain documentation of tutorial pledges
  • Maintain attendance records and class offerings
  • Conduct yearly parent tutorial needs assessment
  • Lend books and monitor their usage as part of facilitating the tutorial program

Knowledge of:

  • School procedures
  • Experience working with parent groups

Ability to:

  • Communicate satisfactorily in oral and written form
  • Serve as an appropriate language model
  • Tutor students
  • Use equipment and technology as needed as it becomes required to perform this job
  • Work with people in a collaborative manner
  • Bilingual abilities are required
  • Must pass the district-administered bilingual test
  • Must be willing to receive tutoring and literacy training through the local council, school or District

 

Requirements / Qualifications

Experience: One year of paid or volunteer experience in a school setting Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade

All requirements must be provided at time of application

  • Letter of Introduction (Please include your experience qualifying you for this posiiton)
  • Letter(s) of Recommendation (1-Within the last 12 months)
  • Proof of HS Graduation
  • Resume
