MAINTENANCE UTILITY WORKER II

 DEFINITION Receive general supervision from an assigned supervisor or designee to perform general maintenance and construction work; assist skilled trade workers in a variety of jobs; perform specialized grounds keeping work; and perform related duties as assigned.

 REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

– (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E).  This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.)

 Perform basic grounds and landscaping maintenance, assist with the installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems.  (E)

 Perform specialized grounds maintenance work of blacktop, asphalt, concrete and bark boxes.  (E)

 Assist with the annual maintenance of natural and artificial lawn and field areas, such as aerating, fertilizing, grooming, etc.  (E)

 Perform basic building and grounds maintenance tasks and assist others with skilled trades work.  (E)

 Perform specialized gardening tasks such as planting, pruning trees, tree removal and tree stump grinding.  (E)

 Abate weeds by hand, using power tools, and spraying herbicides.  (E)

 

 Use a variety of general maintenance tools and equipment such as chain saws, forklifts, jack -hammer, sweepers, blowers, and specialized tools.  (E)

 Assist other trades with trenching, concrete work and other grounds tasks using necessary equipment. (E)

Clean and remove leaves and debris from roof gutters and storm drains. (E)

Maintain regular and prompt attendance in the workplace.   (E)

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Purpose and function of a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance
  • A variety of grounds and utility maintenance procedures performed at a school district
  • A variety of building maintenance and grounds repair techniques
  • Specialized maintenance procedures in such areas as weed control, black top, concrete, and asphalt work, or sprinkler system installation
  • Oral and written communication skills

 ABILITY TO:

  • Perform a variety of grounds and utility maintenance tasks
  • Assist journey-level skilled trades workers with specific tasks
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
  • Physical capability sufficient to perform job tasks
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Carry out oral and written directions; write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to:

  • High school graduation or GED
  • Two years of experience in landscape maintenance and grounds work

 WORKING CONDITIONS

 ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor and outdoor work environment
  • Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors
  • As required must wear protective devices such as earplugs, dust mask, coveralls, gloves, safety boots and safety glasses

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this position must have/be able to:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of trade tools and specialized equipment.
  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • See with or without assistive devices sufficient to perform assigned duties. 
  • Lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs for distances up to 100 ft, or upstairs.
  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 100 lbs for distances up to 100 ft or upstairs.
  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs for short distances
  • Sufficient body movement and balance to bend at the waist, kneel, crawl, crouch, stoop and climb ladders.
  • Reach overhead, above and below the shoulders and horizontally.
  • See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.
  • Tolerate heights

 HAZARDS:

  • Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals
  • Use of power hand tools
  • Exposure to sawdust

TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school, and three years of experience in custodial or general maintenance work which included repair and maintenance tasks on a variety of equipment and facilities, including heating and ventilating systems LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class C driver's license
