Sequoias Community College District is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position of Distance Education Coordinator in Academic Services beginning August 2023.

Job Duties

 

Under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Services, the Distance Education Coordinator (DE Coordinator) will design, implement, coordinate, and evaluate the COS distance education learning program and assist faculty in designing courses in distance modalities that are dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and educationally grounded in the latest pedagogy and technology for online and distance education. The DE Coordinator will identify technology solutions and distance education resources to support existing and emerging learning environments and provide direction to the District in the development and support of distance education. The DE Coordinator will support online, remote, hybrid and traditional classroom- based learning environments committed to equity, access, cultural wealth, and student achievement. The DE Coordinator serves as the content expert for online/distance learning and training for the District with an emphasis on universal design and equity. The coordinator will participate in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments and will foster working relationships respectful of diversity with various stakeholders.

 

Duties of position include:

 

• Coordinate the delivery of distance education courses within and among divisions.

• Work with faculty to expand online offerings and to add courses in new areas that are not currently represented in the online environment including participation in the development and review of curriculum and course/program outlines.

• Coordinate and provide local professional development opportunities, workshops, and training including the District's Online Teaching Certification Program (OTCP), Online Educational Resources (OER) and Zero Textbook Costs (ZTC).

• Work with Academic Senate in identifying the need for effective distance education standards and in identifying policies, procedures, and guidelines.

• Inform the campus community of appropriate findings, initiatives, resources, and opportunities by maintaining appropriate website information, monthly newsletter, and through other means of communication.

• Serve as a point of contact with third-party Distance Education technology system/service providers.

• Act as the primary liaison between the District and the California Community College Chancellor's Office on matters of distance education.

• Participate in the California Virtual Campus (CVC) and California's Online Education Initiative through Peer Online Course Review (POCR).

• Collaborate with applicable campus constituencies to create and maintain a COS distance education portal that will centralize and coordinate online support services for students (including but not limited to, library services, counseling, orientation, disability awareness and access, transfer guidance) and for instructors (including but not limited to OER/ZTC workshops, online technology support, orientations, disability accommodations, student access, tutorials, and successful methodologies).

• Contribute to the development of accreditation requirements of Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) and assist with drafting materials to be included in the self-study document in coordination with the Accreditation Liaison Officer and the Accreditation Work Group.

• Compile annual report to the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor's Office regarding Distance Education.

• Participate in the preparation and composition of status reports for ongoing projects, assist with grants and special programs, including proposals and applications, related to the enhancement of educational technology, distance education, and online instructional design.

• Engage in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.

• Collaborate with Learning Management Systems Coordinator to facilitate online education troubleshooting, system, and technology support.

• Work collegially with the campus community in setting direction for needs assessments, curriculum development, effective pedagogies, distance education modes, faculty training, instructional design support, and distance education policies.

• Attend conferences, workshops, and institutes to stay current on innovations and best practices in distance education.

• Conduct technical research to match faculty pedagogical needs with available technologies and participate in the evaluation, selection, testing and implementation of hardware and software tools, technologies and services that empower faculty and enhance teaching/learning experiences and student services.

• Support advertising and marketing on campus and into the larger COS service area to attract students and faculty alike into distance learning and distance teaching opportunities.

• Co-chair Distance Education Committee meetings and conduct related business (scheduling, meetings, timesheets, agenda, minutes, reports).

• Participate in Educational Technology Committee meetings.

• Participate as a member of Academic Senate Executive Board and attend Academic Senate meetings.

• Attend Statewide Distance Education Coordinator meetings and report updates to stakeholders across campus as needed.

• Attend Curriculum Committee and Instructional Council meetings in an advisory capacity.

 

Assignments will include coordinating on all of the Sequoias Community College District campuses: Visalia, Hanford and Tulare. Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is encouraged.

 

Other responsibilities include maintenance of office hours, participation in department and/or division responsibilities, and the willingness to create and participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, which is respectful of diversity Districtwide.

 

Qualifications

 

The candidate must meet the following criteria:

 

• Master's degree in Instructional Design, Online Learning, Educational Technology, or a related field

 

OR

 

• Master's degree in any subject offered by the Sequoias Community College District along with 2-3 years of experience in the areas listed above

 

OR

 

• The Equivalent AND

• Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, which pursuant to Title 5 §53022, is a core system competency and job requirement.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The Hiring Committee also seeks evidence of the following:

 

• Experience in instructional design, educational technology, and/or online learning development AND related Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas).

• Current technology skills related to teaching in a discipline on campus.

• Commitment to staying current with new technology, instructional design programs, statewide initiatives, and pedagogy related to distance education.

• At least one year of experience working collaboratively with administration, faculty, and staff on the development of online courses.

• Experience with institutional service or participatory governance in a higher education setting (e.g., committees and taskforces).

• Experience working with instructors to produce instructional materials.
