Job Summary
Under the general direction of a secondary principal, to supervise, plan, coordinate, participate, and inspect custodial, grounds-keeping, building, and equipment maintenance in order to assure the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, appearance, and efficiency; to follow inventory, record keeping, and safety procedures of a high school facility; and to perform related duties as required. Plans, coordinates, and participates in custodial, grounds, and building maintenance. Assures that the highest standards for safety, cleanliness, appearance, and efficiency are maintained. Makes daily inspections of the plant and equipment in order to maintain high standards; evaluates employee performance and initiates corrective action; assures safe and efficient operation of equipment; determines the need of, supervises, performs, and/or coordinates maintenance work. Submits reports on plant security, vandalism, thefts, emergencies, supplies, operation costs, use of facilities, and other related matters. Assigns special custodial duties for various educational, social, and civic activities, meet emergencies, and arranges for proper equipment, heating, ventilation, and lighting. Assists the secondary principal in making informal reports and recommendations to appropriate district personnel; maintains records of custodial equipment and inventories, and consults with the Maintenance and Operations Department for technical advice.
Requirements / Qualifications
Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school with 12 units of post high school coursework in job-related subjects is desirable. Any other combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. Three years of progressively more responsible experience in maintenance or custodial functions, a minimum of two years of experience managing or supervising the upkeep of a plant facility, and a minimum of one-year experience in evaluating personnel is required. Knowledge/Abilities: Knowledge of and ability to perform grounds upkeep; buildings and grounds activities, ordering office supplies and equipment, requisitioning, receipting, scheduling, and basic math; procedures, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment used at a secondary site in a comprehensive custodial care/general maintenance and grounds program; and principles of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and water purifying equipment and safe working practices. Ability to demonstrate leadership, good judgement, and common sense in the performance of duties and responsibilities; use, and train others in the use of, cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment in a safe, efficient manner; plan, organize, schedule, and supervise diversified cleaning, minor grounds maintenance, and general maintenance programs at district sites; establish and maintain an effective, efficient records management system related to the custodial care of a secondary school site; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls; establish effective interpersonal relationships with all site staff members; train, supervise, and evaluate personnel; and inspect and report accurately. Licenses/Other: A valid California driver’s license and insurability by the district’s carrier must be maintained at all times.
