Position Description

 

Title: Education Specialist (Special Education)          

Reports To: Assigned Supervisor(s)

Classification:  Certificated

Salary Rate:  Depends on Experience

 JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the site supervisor and the Director of Special Education, the Education Specialist (Special Education) provides instruction, services, consultation, coordination, planning, evaluation and remediation for individuals with learning difficulties, grades kindergarten through fifth grade.  The Coordinator will administer Universal Screening amongst grade levels, collaborate with other site staff, communicate consistently with the general education staff, and create a schedule for students who have had learning difficulties.  Education, background, certification and experience with Special Education is required as you will also be required to initiate all initial assessments of students who might require additional services.  You will be the case manager of the students undergoing initial psycho-educational evaluations.

 BASIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to design instruction, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum and the student’s IEP goals to implement in the general education classroom 
  • Prepare student Individualized Education Plans in consultation with parents, Education Specialist and IEP team members.
    • Act as coordinator of IEP implementation with Education Specialist, general education staff and parents
    • Assess students formally and informally as needed
    • Maintain appropriate student data and other records and submit reports as required.
    • Monitor student progress and use data collection to support research-based instruction and to demonstrate student achievement.
      • Identify and utilize special materials and teaching strategies pertinent to individual student and staff needs.
      • Assist other professional staff in diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation and evaluation of student progress
      • Prescribe and implement behavior management techniques as appropriate
      • Serve as a member or case manager of the IEP Team, the Student Study Team (SST), and other appropriate committees.
      • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with all other school district personnel, parents, other agencies for the best interests of each student.
      • Update knowledge and expertise by attending of meeting, inservice programs, conferences, and reading current literature.
        • Perform other duties as assigned

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university

California Education Specialist Instruction Credential

CLAD or BCLAD or equivalent
NCLB compliant

Learning Center experience preferred

Spanish-speaking preferred (at least basic communication skills)

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Special Education instruction, practices, and law

Learning Centers and related curriculum (Linda-Mood Bell, SRA, Fast ForWord, etc.)

Response to Intervention theory

Formal Assessment Administration (WJIII, KeyMath, TOWL, Brigance, Baterla III, etc.)

Completion and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

How to diagnose learning disorders and provide remediation

 

ABILITY TO:

Be on your feet for extended periods of time

Enter data into a computer and operate standard office equipment

Work collaboratively with staff towards meeting student needs

Be flexible and cooperative

Take initiative and be proactive

Organize groups of students, schedules, and information

Plan and organize to meet schedules and timelines

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone

Seeing to read and prepare documents and perform assigned duties

Kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead to retrieve and store files and supplies,   lifting light objects

The KCNS Teacher Induction Program serves all teachers with Preliminary California Teaching Credentials (General Education – Single Subject, General Education – Multiple Subject, Education Specialist – Mild/Moderate, and/or Education Specialist – Moderate/Severe), teachers with existing Clear California Credentials, and out-of-state teachers who are new to California. It is our commitment to welcome, support, and clear credentials for individuals without regard to race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, medical condition, genetic information, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy, childbirth, gender identity, gender expression, age, or military/veteran status, in accordance with all applicable California and Federal Laws.
