Santa Barbara City College is seeking two full-time, tenure track faculty member positions in the Academic Counseling Center to start in Fall 2023. In 2009, SBCC was designated as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students. Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse post-traditional student population.
Academic Counselor responsibilities include providing academic counseling services in which the student is assisted in identifying, planning and implementing their immediate and long range educational goals; providing student success counseling in which the student is engaged in and assisted with identifying personal and academic strengths and challenges and developing life management skills that affect academic and personal success. The role of the general counselor will also include assessing personal, career/career technical, family or other social concerns affecting students' academic success; empowering students to utilize college and community support services; referring students to personal and career counseling services when appropriate.
The Counselor is also responsible for providing project and/or program leadership and coordinating services as assigned by the District in support of the counseling and student development objectives of the college, Title 5 regulations, and other related state and federal regulations; developing and applying technology-based counseling and advising services; collaborating and serving as liaison with instructional faculty and other educational entities and agencies as assigned; teaching Personal Development/College Success courses as assigned; participating in research and review of effectiveness of counseling programs; and participating in college-wide, department, and individual professional development activities, including participation in the governance of the college via committee assignments. The counselor is also responsible for maintaining currency in effective advising and counseling practices as well as multi-faceted transfer issues that affect student educational planning and guidance. Collaboratively work with students to create individually tailored abbreviated and comprehensive student educational plans that are consistent, accurate, and detail-oriented to map out the student's educational and/or career goals. Ability to work independently and leverage technology to assist students in a remote modality as assigned.
The Counselor is a member of the Educational Support Division of the Academic Senate and is responsible for providing the specific services of a Counselor as described herein and also the general responsibilities described in the Educational Support Faculty Job Description. Expectation to be Department Chair on a rotating basis within the Academic Counseling Center.
Note: The Counselor position will be required to work for a period of 175 days and an additional 20 days beyond the regular 175 day faculty contract for a total of 195 days excluding holidays. This position will be compensated for the additional twenty days beyond the regular faculty contract.
SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS:
The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $64,204 - $100,654 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,210.20. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $128,134, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

• Commitment to the community college mission.
• An understanding of the implications a Hispanic-Serving designation suggests for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.
• An understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of racially and/or ethnically minoritized students within Higher Education shape patterns of participation and outcomes within the classroom.
• Evidence of working effectively with racially and/or ethnically diverse populations.
• Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of students with different ability statuses (e.g. physical and/or learning)
• An understanding of anti-racist and culturally-responsive pedagogical practices which honor and respect what students bring to the classroom and uses students' prior knowledge and/or lived experiences to inform instruction.
• Evidence of working effectively with post-traditional students
• A proven track record of meeting the needs of culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse students, faculty, and staff.
• Leading through a lens of equity and race consciousness and understanding and commitment to culturally responsive or equity-minded teaching and counseling.
• A strong foundation of training and experience in academic counseling practice and a record of excellence in counseling students in a community college setting.
• Evident experience and vision in the successful design and implementation of community college or 4-year university counseling programs and services.
• Evident experience and vision in the use, design and/or integration of technology in the delivery of counseling systems and services.
• Ability to provide leadership and support for college-wide and department-based student success efforts and initiatives.
• Evident teaching experience, particularly in courses with content related to student success, personal development, adult development and/or career development.
• Experience working with and ability to counsel students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, sexual orientation and disability backgrounds. Written and spoken Spanish is preferable.
• Strong public speaking skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written.
• Familiarity with the California Education Code and Community College programs and policies/duties, particularly the California Community College Chancellor's Office Vision for Success.
Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.
• Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR
• Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.
• Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Selection Procedure:
The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
