JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of the Custodial Operations Supervisor and the Lead Grounds Keeper, to perform the skilled operation of powered grounds equipment, including gang mowers, tractors, trucks and trailers; to perform grounds maintenance work; and to perform related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are characterized by the regular performance of grounds keeping and the operation of turf maintenance and light grounds construction equipment. As assigned, incumbents are expected to perform limited tasks of the custodial class and, in other areas at an unskilled or semiskilled level, as a helper or independently. Positions in this class perform work which is highly structured, which is performed in accordance with established schedules from one school to another. Incumbents are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in the schedule to the supervisor for instructions.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plants and cultivates trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs.
• Sprays for control of insects, weeds, and plant diseases.
• Mixes and applies chemicals used for weed control
• Applies fertilizer as needed. Spades and otherwise prepares grounds for planting.
• Mows lawns, trims shrubs, hedges, and trees. Hoes weeds and rakes lawn.
• Operates power riding lawn mowers, sweepers, sprayers, trucks, skip loaders, tractors, chain saws, power edgers and other motorized equipment.
• Uses tractor attachments as the job demands
• Levels ground and builds mounds for athletic fields
• Hauls dirt, trash, manure and other materials
• Drags fields
• Maintains grounds equipment and vehicles in a safe operating condition.
• Prepares stadium and sports fields for athletic events, drags and marks fields.
• Cleans and repairs fields and facilities following events.
• Performs general grounds clean-up including picking up paper and trash on grounds areas.
• Performs building maintenance and cleaning duties.
• Checks, services, and assists in installation of sprinkler irrigation systems.
• Sets and operates sprinkler clocks to water lawns and fields.
• Transports equipment as required using trucks and trailers sufficient to complete assigned task.
• Off season, will be required to do site maintenance work as needed i.e. gutters, drainage ditches and other maintenance I duties
• May perform duties at sites not permanently assigned to, i.e. high school position may be required to work district wide
• Performs related work as required
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License.
Pesticide license required (Training will be provided if necessary)
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Operation, use and maintenance of powered grounds equipment, tractors and attachments;
• Methods, materials and tools used in grounds keeping work;
• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
• Perform grounds equipment operation work, including the operation of tractors, trucks, power gang mowers and attachments;
• Perform general grounds keeping work;
• Use herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers in an appropriate and safe manner;
• Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above and the ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is working-level experience performing grounds keeping and mower operation work;
or
Experience at or equivalent to the level of Maintenance Worker I in the Amador Unified School District, from which the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires the prospective employee to pass a pre-employment physical.
Physical requirements include:
1. Employee lifts/carries 85 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the time).
2. Employee lifts/carries 40 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time).
3. Employee lifts/carries 20 pounds constantly (67-100% of the time).
4. Employee's position requires pushing a maximum force of 36 pounds on objects.
5. Employee's position requires pulling a maximum force of 36 pounds on objects.
Mobility:
• Positions in this class require the mobility to stand, stoop, squat, kneel, climb ladders, reach and bend.
Other Conditions:
• Incumbents may be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold and rain
• Incumbents may be required to work with harsh or toxic substances
• Incumbents may be required to wear protective apparel, including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus
WORK DAYS AND PAY RANGE
The work year for the Grounds Maintenance Worker is 260 days. Salary is Range 20 of the ACUSD Classified Salary Schedule.
