Job Description
THIS IS A CATEGORICALLY FUNDED POSITION. CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT IS BASED ON CONTINUED FUNDING.
This posting is to fill a full-time, non-tenure track, categorically funded position within the Student Services division at San Bernardino Valley College. This position is contingent upon funding. This position will be serving Umoja and Justice impacted student populations.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
This position falls under the Associate Dean of Student Services. The Counselor shall perform all regularly assigned duties that include academic, career, and personal counseling including follow-up services. Specific responsibilities include evaluating student transcripts, and assisting students with career decisions, on-line education planning which includes creating comprehensive student education plans, transfer guidance and course selection. Evening and some weekend work will be required as part of this position. Counselors work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity, ethical practices, innovation, collegiality, teamwork, and adaptability to San Bernardino Valley College's campus culture in support of student success.
Representative Duties:
The following duties are typical for this classification.
Other responsibilities to this position, include, but are not limited to;
1. Teaching student development courses
2. Performing liaison activities to service area high schools and the community.
3. Serving as a liaison to instructional divisions.
4. Assisting with the development of counseling related publications.
5. Presenting workshops and conducting follow-up for special student populations including probation and dismissal students.
6. Appropriately assisting in the development and implementation of special programs focusing on access and retention.
7. Participating in curriculum development for student development courses.
8. Conducting student orientations and student success workshops.
9. Participate in departmental meetings and activities including campus-wide activities.
Qualifications
Education and Experience Guidelines:
Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,
(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
OR the equivalent*
AND
Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Demonstrated experience working with Black/African-American students, justice impacted students and other underserved populations.
2. Knowledge of the Umoja programs and the resources need to support Black/African-American students.
3. Acute cultural competency skills as demonstrated by knowledge and understanding of the needs of historically marginalized students.
Employment Requirements
The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
• Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
• Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
• Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
• Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule)
• Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
