ABOUT THE POSITON

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenured Ethnic Studies Professor. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's in the ethnic studies field OR

• A master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies OR

• the equivalent OR see interdisciplinary Studies

Local Equivalency:

An earned Master's degree in a related field such as history, political science, urban studies, women's studies, area studies, sociology, humanities, or social science including 18 units of upper-division and graduate semester units in Ethnic Studies, American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, Chicano Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian American Studies, African American Studies, Afro-American Studies, Africana Studies or Black Studies. Coursework must cover one or more of the four core groups identified in AB 1460 (Native Americans, African Americans, Latina/o Americans and/or Asian Americans.)

All candidates must demonstrate

Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• An M.A. or Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Chicana/a Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, or Native American/American Indian Studies.

• A strong educational emphasis in Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and African American Studies, Asian American Studies and Native American/American Indian Studies.

• Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of Ethnic Studies, Chicana/a Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American/American Indian Studies or courses in related fields.

• Two years of recent experience teaching Ethnic Studies-related courses to college students, especially at the community college level.

• Evidence of a commitment to equitable teaching outcomes.

• Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, and disability backgrounds.

• Evidence of the ability to use a variety of teaching strategies that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.

• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively utilizing verbal, written, and on­ line communication skills.

• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.

• Desire and demonstrated ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
