 POSITION:  Library Media Specialist (Bard High School Early College Queens, NY) 

DESCRIPTION:   Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Queens (24Q299), a partnership of Bard College and the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE), invites applications for a full-time position in our library. BHSEC Queens seeks professionals deeply committed to the field of library science and/or digital humanities. BHSEC, a national model in the field of public school reform, provides the opportunity for talented and highly motivated students to move in four years from the ninth grade through the first two years of college, earning an associate of arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College as well as a high school diploma. The academic program emphasizes a commitment to teaching a diverse student body in a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate should have a current DoE Library Media Specialist certification and experience in education and/or libraries at the high school and/or college level.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Maintain and update a library collection of rich academic databases, computers, books, and a national interlibrary loan resource-sharing program
  • Manage the library budget
  • Collaborate with and supports faculty in student research projects, curriculum support and professional development, and makes regular classroom visits to demonstrate research resources and strategies
  • Troubleshoot hardware technical problems in the library and interface with the IT Coordinator
  • Help students use academic resources for homework and projects
  • Provide supervision within the library and coverage of library circulation desk as needed
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current on professional literature, best practices, and emerging technologies
  • Work with students interested in supporting the library or in clubs that overlap with your interests
  • Other duties as assigned 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Demonstrated ability to respectfully and effectively communicate with a diverse student body, parents, faculty, staff, education partners and community based organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate data in library database systems as well as in Microsoft and Google software programs
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated willingness to participate in professional development activities and the professional learning community at the school

Location: Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Queens, 30-20 Thomson Ave., Long Island City, Queens, NY

Start Date: January 2023

Duration: Full-time ongoing

Compensation:  Compensation is based on the NYC DOE salary scale.
