Network Administrator II

Salary Range: $7,257 - $8,921 per month

To provide technical support in the installation, maintenance and servicing of the District’s data and related system software and hardware components; to provide technical support necessary for the operation of District computer labs; to troubleshoot and solve technical problems; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

• Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.

• Exercises functional and technical oversight of lower level information technology staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This class is the advanced journey classification in the Computer Support Technician series.  It is distinguished from the Computer Support Technician and Senior Computer Support Technician classifications by the performance of complex and difficult responsibilities related to the District’s network, data, and related software and hardware components; serves as a high level resource for computer related issues for information technology staff and District personnel.  Actions may have a high impact on the technological performance of the District. 

 

Responsibilities and Duties

• Provide technical support in the installation, maintenance and servicing of the District's data and telecommunication systems and related system software and hardware components.

• Provide technical assistance and support in PC interface with audio/video department.

• Analyze and assess the technological needs of the District; recommend and/or design computer software applications; program new applications or enhance existing programs.

• Confer with information services staff in the evaluation, selection, acquisition and implementation of computer hardware and/or software solutions.

• Evaluate, test and implement new operating systems or systems software packages; install new versions, releases or maintenance levels of existing operating systems.

• Review, evaluate and analyze new or updated software or operating systems; confer with staff and recommend modifications to existing systems.

• Detect, isolate and resolve network problems; utilize vendor coordination and support as needed; implement bypasses or other resolutions. Install, troubleshoot and repair electronic athletic equipment including scoreboards, time clocks, public address systems and exercise equipment.

• Provide technical support in the operation of computer laboratories; work with staff to resolve technical problems and enforce the proper use of equipment.

• Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of information systems.

• Train and coordinate the work of student and short-term employees; oversee and train lower level information technology staff.

• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Knowledge of:

• Methods and techniques used in the installation, trouble shooting, upgrading and problem resolution of information systems.

• Operational characteristics of various computer programs, networks, software packages and programming languages.

• Methods and techniques of system design, programming and software installation.

• Principles and procedures of quality assurance and security related to computer information systems.

• Computer applications, programming and principal languages used in the performance of assigned duties.

• Standard office procedures, methods and equipment.

 

Ability to:

• Independently perform systems analysis activities.

• Install, troubleshoot and upgrade District information systems.

• Evaluate, test, implement and support new operating systems.

• Analyze and assess the technological needs of the District.

• Read and comprehend complex written and technical materials.

• Detect, isolate and resolve network problems.

• Provide technical support in the operation of computer laboratories.

• Work independently in the absence of supervision.

• Operate standard office equipment.

• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.

• Sit, stand, walk, bend and stoop for prolonged periods of time; lift 30 pounds.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, information systems, electronics or a related field and four (4) years of increasingly responsible related experience with at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

OR

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, information systems, electronics or a related field and two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience with at one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
