Applications are now being accepted for a 11-month Counselor Mental Health Coordinator position at San Diego Mesa College beginning Fall 2022. Mesa College is the largest of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District with a student population of approximately 24,000 and may include a combination of day, weekend and evening hours.

Under the direction of the Student Health Services Director, this position will provide clinical mental health services and mental health treatment, rapidly address crisis care situations and plan/implement programs and services to promote mental health wellness and suicide prevention for Mesa College students. This position will consult and advise on complex matters, provide educational leadership, individual and group counseling as well as classroom teaching/presentations. In addition, this position will collaborate and provide support to the Dean of Student Affairs in addressing student concerns and violations. The position will serve as lead clinician with added administrative duties.

While the current vacancy exists at San Diego Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

Major Responsibilities:

• Plan, implement and deliver mental health clinical services and mental health treatment to students in support of wellness, academic success and retention.

• Confer with Director and faculty regarding individual students.

• Serve as a resource for faculty dealing with individual student problems.

• Provide 1:1, group and/or family counseling to students.

• Design, implement and evaluate community health events, workshops, classroom teaching and other student health programs that promote wellness and enhance students’ abilities to benefit from college.

• Respond to crisis events impacting the learning environment and provide crisis intervention to students as needed.

• Collect and analyze data from mental health services and design program improvements.

• Research and provide referrals services to students in need of mental health resources beyond those offered on campus.

• Serve as a consultant on mental health matters that may influence student behavior, motivation, and learning process issues including mental illness, suicide, domestic violence, stalking, and threats toward others.

• Provide professional development training with Student Health Services; distribute resources to staff and faculty.

• Maintain collaborative relationships with local mental health agencies; maintain database of community resources.

• Provide a safe and confidential environment conducive to effective interactions.

Qualifications:

(a) Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the discipline of the faculty member’s assignment. (b) Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in a discipline reasonably related to the faculty member’s assignment and possession of a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the discipline of the faculty member’s assignment.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience:

• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty.

• A minimum of three years of recent, supervised experience providing direct delivery of mental health services.

• Three years of experience as a licensed Mental Health Counselor in an institution of higher education, providing direct mental health to students.

• Experience with responding to crisis care situations in a college setting.

• Experience with establishing and meeting defined goals/objectives within a student health services program.

• Experience with planning, implementing and evaluating mental health programs and services that promote mental health and wellness, including suicide prevention.

• Experience in coordinating and leading mental health professionals within a college or university setting.

• Experience serving as a mental health resource within a college setting.

• Experience working closely with medical professionals and collaborating in a college or university setting.

• Experience in crisis response/intervention.

Knowledge of:

• Operations, services, and activities of a student mental health program.

• Diverse student populations.

• Counseling principles, practices, and techniques.

• Applicable policies, procedures, goals, and objectives of a student mental health program.

• Clear pathway of systemic planning for care in an academic setting.

• Philosophy and objectives of the California Community College system.

• Information and research resources related to areas of assignment.

• Effective and appropriate communication skills.

• Principles and procedures of record keeping and report preparation.

• Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software.

Skills and abilities to:

• Participate in the activities and services offered in the Student Health Services program.

• Provide a full range of mental health counseling services to a diverse student population.

• Evaluate, treat, and manage acute and serious psychological disorders.

• Demonstrate proper care for an emergent psychiatric crisis situation in a college setting (including the ability to make appropriate in-school and outside agency referrals).

• Accurately assess, develop, evaluate, follow-up and make referrals regarding students’ need for therapy.

• Assist in the development, administration, and implementation of program goals, objectives, and procedures.

• Design, develop and deliver mental health programs in a college/university setting

• Exercise critical and independent judgment.

• Maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and concise reports.

• Apply legal and ethical standards of licensed mental health professionals.

• Establish effective relationships with students, faculty, staff and community

• Effectively utilize applicable computer software applications.

• Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse racial, ethnic, disabled, sexual orientation, and cultural populations of community college students.

• Work effectively and collaboratively with others.

• Establish collaborative relationships with local mental health agencies.

• Provide education to interns or other mental health professionals.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Licenses:

California Licensed Marriage Family Therapist or Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Pay Information:

Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 – $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
