Welcome to the Whittier City School District, a Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade school district with eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one K-8 school. We serve approximately 6,300 students who matriculate into the Whittier Union High School District. Whittier City School District offers advanced technology programs, including 1:1 devices, Apple TV, and innovative instruction to support all students. Whittier City School District is one of seven local districts that join together in a Special Education Cooperative (SELPA) serving Whittier area special needs students. COMMUNITY lIAISON

Under general supervision, to provide a communication link between the community and the school; to assist in the planning, organization and conduct of a parent volunteer service program; and to do other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Procedures, methods, techniques, and strategies used in the development of school and community liaison processes;
  • Multilingual and multicultural programs as required by the assignment;
  • Purpose, goals and objectives of public education;Procedures, methods, techniques and strategies utilized in dealing with sensitive school and community problems, issues and concerns;

Ability to:

  • Speak, read and write Spanish and serve as an appropriate English speaking model as required by the assignment;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Relate well to adults and children
  • Work well with others and maintain good working relationships that encourage volunteer participation in the school
  • Operate a variety of office machines and equipment such as a telephone, calculator, typewriter, copier, computer and related software
  • Establish and maintain cooperative educational community relationships

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Supports a friendly atmosphere where parents and other volunteers are welcomed, helped, and encouraged
  • Performs a variety of services as a communication link between school and members of the educational community, some of whom may be experiencing linguistic and cultural differences
  • Effectively communicates with parents and community members both verbally and in writing regarding school events, activities, and programs
  • Assists community members in understanding program goals and objectives, and enlists their support and involvement in the educational process
  • Assists in creating a greater understanding of educational procedures, issues and concerns
  • Provides translation and interpretative services pertaining to both oral and written communication relating to the community liaison position
  • May participate in sensitive conversations with school community members
  • Recruits, organizes and coordinates parent volunteer service programs
  • Assists with the planning and organization of parent events
    Performs other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS


The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

A high school diploma or equivalent, and any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:


Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience providing service in community service programs or similarly related areas.

Education:

  • High school graduation or equivalent, with coursework or training in child growth and development, instructional processes, or community service programs, or similarly related areas;
  • Pass District proficiency exam;
  • Pass District bilingual (Spanish) proficiency exam for bilingual (Spanish) required positions
