CAPISTRANO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT San Juan Capistrano, California ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E.) TEACHER – SPECIAL EDUCATION DEFINITION The Adapted P.E. Teacher for Special Education, plans, organizes, presents, and evaluates a program of meaningful instruction in physical education to students enrolled in the various special education programs of the District who cannot participate in the regular physical education program and/or who require specialized programs in physical education to assist in overcoming specific handicaps. The Adapted P.E. Teacher will work under the joint and cooperative supervision of the School Principal and the Coordinator of Special Education. The Adapted P.E. Teacher will travel from school to school where the District’s special education programs are housed, as necessary, to fulfill the responsibilities of the daily schedule. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES •Teaches adapted P.E. skills to students enrolled in the various special education programs of the District. •Instructs students in classes and instructional periods according to an assigned daily schedule which includes time and location of teaching stations. •Provides individualized and small group instruction based on the needs of the students. •Attends and participates in Admission and Transfer Committee meetings held at regular intervals, as required by law. •Maintains accurate records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations. •Provides continuous student evaluation consistent with established teacher, school, and/or District objectives, goals, and policy. •Aids students to maintain standard and follow acceptable rules of conduct. •Prepares for classes assigned and develops written evidence of preparation when requested at a reasonable time in advance by supervisor. •May attend school staff meetings when requested to do so by a principal. •Takes time for planning, evaluating, and conferencing. •Provides reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and the school facility. •Accepts reasonable share of responsibility for the general operation of the school program. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Laws governing special education with emphasis on Public Law 94-142 and the State of California Master Plan for Special Education. Ability to: Comply with the District’s customer service standards, as outlined in Board Policy. Experience: Student teaching or the equivalent of full-time experience necessary to qualify for the appropriate credential. Education: Bachelor’s degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Credential: Valid California Credential authorizing the teaching of remedial physical education to students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. 7/02 Revised 9/03;1/10
