Welcome to the Whittier City School District, a Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade school district with eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one K-8 school. We serve approximately 6,300 students who matriculate into the Whittier Union High School District. Whittier City School District offers advanced technology programs, including 1:1 devices, Apple TV, and innovative instruction to support all students. Job Description / Essential Elements:

The library aide is under general supervision of the principal, to work in an elementary school library; to perform a variety of library media clerical tasks; to assist students in the use of the library; support for instructional personnel; and to do other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
o Maintains organization of books and other library/media materials
o Monitors book circulation
o Repairs damaged books and other library/media materials
o Provides instruction and guidance on library check-out procedures
o Assists students in locating reference materials
o Provides an attractive library environment
o Assists students in the development of appropriate social behaviors
EDUCATION AND REQUIREMENTS
o Coursework or training in child growth and development instructional processes desirable:
o Bilingual (Spanish) desirable
Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the law requires that paraprofessionals who assist in classroom instruction must meet the following minimum requirements:
o AA/AS Degree or completion of 48 college level units and high school graduation

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
o Library methods, practices and terminology
o Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar
o Book binding and repair
o Record keeping techniques
Ability to:
o Assist teachers and students with special projects and use of the library
o Maintain discipline and order among students using the library
o Order, process, distribute and maintain records of library materials
o Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
o Work independently with limited supervision
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
o Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
o This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods.
o Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

EXPERIENCE
One year of paid or volunteer experience working with students in a library, classroom or a related setting.
