BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the principal (or designee), maintains order and security for day and evening activities on a secondary school campus and at nearby off-campus public and private properties; assures student compliance with school and district policies and regulations; provides work direction and guidance to campus monitors; and assists administrators with safety and security procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
• Enforces school and district rules, regulations, and policies for the safety and security of students, staff, and property according to established procedures.
• Patrols building and grounds to provide protection against things such as vandalism, burglary, arson, trespassing, and theft; and reports information to appropriate personnel.
• Monitors parking lots and general campus areas including areas such as cafeterias, lunch areas, bathrooms, and athletic fields on foot and/or golf cart to ensure regulations and/or policies are followed for student, staff and general public safety.
• Monitors public and private properties near campus for the purpose of preventing loitering, littering, disturbances, and providing safe student ingress/egress to campus. • Directs vehicle and human traffic on campus to ensure student and staff safety. • Uses radios, walkie-talkies, or other devices to communicate with other staff and the office.
• Makes recommendations and assists school administration regarding security matters including creating supervision routes for campus monitors and other matters of safety and security on campus.
• Leads, directs, and assists in the training of campus monitors.
• Gathers incident reports from students and/or others as directed by administration; assists administration as directed with investigations including backpack, car, or locker searches according to established legal procedures and district policy.
• Intercepts, prevents, or intervenes in conflicts, fights, and disturbances to ensure student and/or staff safety using appropriate interventions.
• Authorizes visitors on campus as assigned; checks identifications and passes to ensure students and visitors on campus are in authorized locations at appropriate times. • Escorts, by either walking or driving a golf cart, individuals to specified locations. • Maintains orderly control of crowds and enforces safety regulations at special events. • Cooperates with law enforcement when on they are on campus, as needed and required. • Maintains courteous relations with students; promotes good student, staff, and community relationships; maintains appropriate confidentiality from and about students and/or situations.
• Intercepts, prevents or intervenes in fights and disturbances to ensure student and/or staff safety.
• Monitors students and campus for illegal substances, items, materials, and activities. • Attends in-service, training, and staff meetings as directed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Basic interests, attitudes, and emotional development of adolescents. • Basic school security and safety laws, policies, rules, regulations, and procedures; basic traffic laws and regulations.
• Principles of first aid and CPR.
• Crowd control procedures.
• Safe and effective campus supervision methods and procedures including positive behavior supports and de-escalation techniques.
• Safe utilization of a golf cart.
• Effective leadership skills.
• Skills utilized to maintain positive relationships with students and staff.
Ability to:
• Assess and analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action without escalation of the situation; make quick decisions in emergency situations. • Handle normal and confrontational situations in a calm manner.
• Work independently; work outdoors.
• Be flexible and able to adapt to changes in routine and duties.
• Patrol buildings, campus, and nearby facilities in an unimposing manner. • Appropriate and professional communication skills using a radio, walkie-talkie, or other communication device.
• Understand and respect the rights of all students; maintain confidentiality of information.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and written, with others using tact, patience, and courtesy.
• Operate a computer and related software; send and receive emails.
• Understand and follow both written and oral directions, work rules, and procedures. • Maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with staff and other district personnel.
• Understand, be sensitive to and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities, and sexual orientation of staff, students, and the public who may be encountered as part of any working assignment. • Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education: High School diploma, or equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in security and monitoring student behavior.
Licenses, Certifications, and/or Testing Required: Valid California Class C driver’s license and evidence of insurability; TB Test clearance, pre-employment physical and drug testing clearance, Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance, valid CPR and first aid certificate.
