LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE
JOB SUMMARY
Licensed Vocational Nurse will, under supervision of the Director of Special Education and Nurse/Nurse Practitioner, perform necessary duties of a responsible nature to assist in monitoring the health and welfare of students, documenting and maintaining student health information required by Federal/State/Local agencies, and providing appropriate care and/or referral for the medically fragile and/or injured student as may be required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
District policies and procedures as they apply; Standard nursing practices and procedures; First aid and health care practices and procedures; Basic symptoms of communicable and other childhood related diseases; Operation of a variety of office machines used in a modern office environment; Record keeping techniques; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Effective oral and written communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Child growth and development principles; Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws.
Ability to:
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff and the public (including members of ethnic communities)
Make simple arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) rapidly and accurately.
Perform routine clerical duties such as filing, duplication, keyboarding, and maintaining records.
Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Compile, maintain, and submit accurate and complete records and reports.
Verify accuracy and completeness of documents and process data.
Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
Provide health care services to the special needs of students.
Understand and follow both oral and written directions.
Operate office equipment following proper instruction.
Understand and address students with special needs.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Speak and understand Spanish (desirable).
Provide specialized nursing services.
Meet schedules and deadlines.
Plan and organize work.
Print and write legibly.

Work confidentially.
Experience and Education:
Any combination equivalent to: Equivalent completion or graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurses Training program; One (1) year of job-related experience or equivalent; Possession of valid Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate; Possession of a valid California Class B Motor Vehicle Operators License.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION
1. Perform a wide variety of specialized and responsible work independently; interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate.
2. Administers first aid, medication and specialized treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
3. Assists nurse, students, and other school personnel for the purpose of providing specialized treatments, monitoring medical treatments and/or testing.
4. Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, health records (e.g. mandated screening, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
5. Compiles data for reports (e.g. mandated monthly status reports, logs, etc.) for the purpose of assisting the nurse in preparation of required documentation.
6. Prepares documentation (e.g. medical emergency cards, accident reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
7. Refers students to the Nurse/Nurse Practitioner requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing needed medical/dental treatment, counseling, etc.
8. Reports students with contagious diseases to the Nurse/Nurse Practitioner for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.
9. Attends appropriate staff meetings and inservice training.
10. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
11. Cleans work areas (e.g. sinks, counters, buckets, cots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.
12. Assists in providing information on medical treatments for the purpose of instructing school personnel, students and/or parents on various health subjects (e.g. lice).
13. Attend and participate in staff meetings and inservice activities; Attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase healthcare knowledge.
