BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Technology, performs specialized work implementing, maintaining, servicing and monitoring local and wide, wired and wireless computing and telecommunications network. Carries out installation, testing, and technical tasks in support of the network infrastructure for
connected devices. Performs journey-level technical duties and provides system level support for district networks, servers, and associated processes. Provide day-to-day support for district local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), network servers, and end-user computer workstations. Provides professional, courteous and timely customer service to staff and students.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Network/Computer Specialist I is a mid-level position in this series and has the most limited scope of any network specialist. The Network Specialist I is knowledgeable and capable of supporting specific tasks within the network, but may not understand how those specific tasks fit into the broader picture of how everything works together. The Network Specialist II has a broader scope of knowledge and capability. The Network Specialist II level is able to understand the major components of networks and, generally, how those components fit into the overall environment. The Network Specialist II functions at the journey-level and performs all the duties of and gives guidance to the entry-level positions of Network/Computer Technician and the Network/Computer Specialist I.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The duties listed below are just the essential duties of this class. Furthermore, more general duties may be reasonably extrapolated from any specific duty statement listed below.
- Perform all the duties of a Network/Computer Specialist I.
- Install network file servers including network operating system, network utilities, application software, and peripheral devices; obtain technical guidance from Senior Network Engineer; provide technical guidance to Network/Computer Specialists I and Network/Computer Technicians; lift, move, re-position, and connect moderately heavy network and workstation equipment components.
- Assist in developing and executing network procedures, such as bandwidth utilization trending, under own direction and under the technical direction of Senior Network Engineer.
- Develop solutions that support the efficient functioning and ongoing management of the district’s network infrastructure and are consistent with district standards. As solutions become robust and procedural, turn over execution to Network Specialists I, Network/Computer Technicians, or site personnel, as applicable; document solutions and train as needed.
- Expand on system-level understanding of network and server applications; improve the efficiency and effectiveness of network application support.
- Expand and enhance district WAN to provide access to external information sources on a state, national, or global basis; assist the Senior Network Engineer in collecting pertinent WAN and LAN statistics for network performance analysis and capacity planning.
INITIAL/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
OPTION ONE:
- A degree with an emphasis in information systems or computer science (computer operation, information systems, or network operations).
- Two (2) years general computer and/or technical experience in installing and maintaining computer networks, and one (1) year of experience in network management.
- One (1) year of current duties as Network Specialist I or equivalent level is preferred.
OPTION TWO:
- Graduation from high school OR General Education Development (GED) equivalent is required.
- Five (5) years general computer and/or technical experience in installing and maintaining computer networks and three (3) years’ experience in network management.
- Two (2) years of current duties must be at the Network Specialist I or equivalent level is preferred.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Class C Driver's License and availability of private transportation.
- DMV Driving History Report
