TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Director-Technology, perform a variety of technical duties involved in the installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of computer hardware, software, peripherals and network systems.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Install, configure, modify and maintain computer hardware, software and peripherals to assure the smooth running of computer work stations and systems; respond to user requests for service; install, upgrade and update computer software, operating systems and applications as needed.

Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve hardware, software, peripheral and network system malfunctions; install, configure, maintain and repair a variety of computer system peripherals and components such as monitors, printers, scanners, network equipment and related devices; maintain and troubleshoot network components such as routers, servers, switches and other components, and cabling issues.

Perform a variety of network and database administration activities including establishing and maintaining user lists and accounts, passwords, e-mail accounts, security applications and designated programs and systems.

Provide technical training and assistance to District personnel concerning the operation of computer hardware, software and related peripherals as needed; respond to inquiries and provide detailed and technical information concerning related practices, procedures, applications and malfunctions.

Inspect and test equipment to determine feasibility of repairs; utilize test programs and equipment; install replacement parts and equipment such as hard drives, disk drives, power supplies and video cards; report warranty-covered repair needs to appropriate service agencies.

Prepare computer equipment for use; install software and hardware and observe and test elements of computers for evidence of incorrect performance; connect work stations to network server; configure and troubleshoot computers to assure proper wireless network, internet, and database access and connectivity.

Install, configure, modify and maintain IP phones and related components and devices as assigned; inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve IP phone problems and malfunctions; establish and maintain voice mail accounts.

Prepare, pack, load, transport and unload computer equipment for installation at various District sites; unpack and inspect new equipment for damage; test and observe performance of computer systems, peripherals and programs to assure proper operation.

Prepare backup data files and archives in accordance with established network procedures; monitor available system disk space; move and delete files as necessary to provide for system space and program running; perform system restores and recoveries as needed.

Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in computer hardware and software; assist with research and provide recommendations concerning the purchase of computer hardware and software; contact vendors to discuss and obtain product information; test and evaluate new computer systems.

Input and update a variety of data in designated computer systems as assigned; maintain and update databases and automated records and files; import and export data ; create queries and manipulate data. 

Communicate with personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; initiate and receive telephone calls as needed; contact vendors and manufacturers to receive assistance with resolving computer hardware and software malfunctions as needed.

Operate a variety of computers, servers, peripherals and specialized software; utilize various hand tools, meters and testers; drive a personal vehicle to conduct District work, including transporting single large or multiple small items as needed to perform job duties.

Prepare and maintain various records and reports concerning maintenance, installations, inventory, warranties and assigned activities; maintain and update procedural and user manuals and documentation as required; prepare and update trouble tickets.

Monitor and maintain computer system security; run and update anti-virus programs as needed; implement anti-virus solutions and security patches.

Write and edit codes and scripts, and perform other programming activities as assigned.

Respond to emergency requests for support and repairs. 

Attend and participate in various meetings, seminars and conferences as assigned.

Assist with monitoring inventory levels of computer supplies and equipment; assist with ordering and maintaining adequate inventory levels of supplies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  graduation from high school supplemented by college-level course work in computer science or related field and two years experience involving the installation, maintenance and repair of computer hardware, software and peripherals

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid California drivers license; use of a motor vehicle during working hours; must have an insurable driving record.
