Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students, with room to expand on its 267-acre main campus and 120-acre Los Banos site, as well as at our innovative Business Resource Center in Downtown Merced. As a member of the Campus Police Department you will work at the direction of the Chief. This position provides for the safety of staff, students and visitors to our campus. Officers working for the Merced Community College District provide and perform law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws, ordinances and board policies. Officer also provide important nonenforcement services to our staff, students, and members of the community. General Description:

 

Under general supervision of the direction of Chief Law Enforcement Officer, provide safety for all staff, students and visitors and perform law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.

 

(May be assigned to Merced or Los Banos Campus)

 

Examples of Duties

 

Representative Duties:

 

• Performs routine police tasks according to department rules and regulations

• Patrols the campus and its perimeter by vehicle, bicycle or on foot for the prevention of crime, detection of fire hazards, safety hazards, enforcement of public safety, county, state and federal laws, campus and traffic regulations

• Responds to emergency calls to fire, accidents and other requests for assistance

• Performs rescue work and administers first aid

• Maintains emergency public safety equipment

• Participates in training programs

• Investigates violations of laws, complaints and accidents

• Prepares reports and log activity and irregularities which occur during the assigned shift

• Arrests law violators and issues citations for traffic violations

• Takes fingerprints and photographs

• Interviews suspects, complainants and witnesses to obtain information

• Prepares written reports

• Provides court room testimony

• Operates a personal computer, fax and other related office equipment

• Analyze data, interpret directions, develop appropriate responses under stressful conditions

• Represent the district in a professional manner

• Other related duties as assigned

 

Knowledge of:

 

• Constitutional rights, laws of state, and laws pertaining to search and seizure

• Social problems of the community, including racial, religious and ethnic group relations

• Use of firearms, defensive tactics and other related tools needed to perform the duties of a police officer

• Methods and techniques to improve security

 

Ability to:

 

• Analyze situations and exercise good judgment with a minimum of supervision

• Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports

• Confront people on security matters without unnecessary alienation

• Stand and walk for long periods of time in various types of weather

• Communicate effectively with others in person or telephone

• Speak and write clearly and correctly

• Possess strength to perform prolonged and rigorous tasks under stressful conditions

• Meet standards set by the State for physical and mental conditions and agility

• React quickly and calmly in emergencies

• Deal courteously but firmly with the general public

• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

 

Typical Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:

 

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Must be 18 years of age at time of employment

• Must have no prior convictions by any state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment of which would have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison

• Experience in law enforcement, communication, first aid and CPR

• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

 

License or Certificate

 

• Possession of a valid California Driver's License

• Must be P.O.S.T. Basic Academy graduate

OR

• Have P.O.S.T. certification of current attendance and graduation date from P.O.S.T. Academy

 

Desired:

 

• AA or BA in related field
