Maintenance Custodian
The Maintenance Custodian is a classified, non-exempt position with Element Education. The Maintenance Custodian reports to the Chief Business Officer and the Chief Operating Officer and performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that all students, staff, and the community are provided a safe, attractive, clean, and healthy environment for learning and work.
Essential Functions
General Administration
- Perform routine repair and maintenance to school facilities and equipment including, but not limited to:
- Carpentry: Performs rough and finished carpentry work in the repair of structure such as partitions, walls, doors, fences, window frames, roofs, office furniture, and shelves
- Glazier: Removes broken glass from window(s) and secures building for safety purposes by boarding up window openings; replaces window and door hardware; replaces glass for windows, doors, and light fixtures; replaces window screens
- Electrical: Performs electrical repair work in wiring for switches, outlets, plugs, cables, power circuits and appliances; repairs and replaces lighting systems, inspects electrical systems for unsafe conditions; maintains and regularly tests working condition of safety equipment including fire alarm, emergency lighting, and door alarms.
- Plumbing: Identifies plumbing problems; repairs and maintains plumbing leaks or breaks above and below ground; repairs and maintains appropriate functioning systems including sewer/supply lines and drains and fire sprinkler and suppression systems; replaces seals and other minor parts, maintains all underground water lines; maintains drinking fountains, repairs, replaces, and maintains hot water heaters and other appliances; repairs restroom commodes and sink fixtures; snaking drain lines
- Painting: Prepares surfaces for painting by pressure washing, chemical paint removal, sandblasting, sanding, brush painting, roller painting, and power spray painting; Applies and prepares various surfaces for paint, enamel, lacquer, varnish or stain; removes or paints over graffiti; repairs wall coverings
- Grounds Maintenance: Maintains grounds in clean and orderly manner
- Masonry: lays forms, mixes, pours, finishes, and repairs concrete for sidewalks, pavers, ramps, and slabs; installs tile and grout; performs patch repairs; repairs various floor coverings
- Locksmith: Troubleshoots, repairs, and adjusts locks on doors, cabinets, desks, closets; repairs door hinges; maintaining and installing door closers, kick plates, hinges, locks and cylinders; repairs and replaces locks as needed
- Safety/Security/Sanitation: Responds to, reports, and removes any safety hazards; reports and repairs damage to school site property; reports unauthorized visitors; secures gates, doors, windows, and grounds; sets alarm system; responds to emergency cleanups such as spills and clogged drains
- Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation in connection with (1) electrical and plumbing, (2) exterior and interior of buildings, including roof, and (3) facility grounds
- Perform regular inspections and report any abnormalities or hazards
- Initiate and complete work order requests in a timely manner by using the online system and verifying orders have been approved prior to performing tasks; Keep the person who initiated the work up to date on the status of the work order and when it has been completed
- Recommend repairs or procedures that are beyond the scope of responsibilities, skill, or experience, outlining the work needed and specifications required of an outside contractor
- Assemble, adjust, move, and arrange equipment and furniture; stack and store furniture, equipment and supplies; set up and take down tables and chairs
- Operate and maintain in a safe and operational condition all tools and equipment necessary to carry out job functions and responsibilities
- Maintain an adequate supply of parts and supplies usually used in repairs and request needed supplies through the established procedures
- Make recommendations for improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of the maintenance operations
- Perform custodial activities, as needed, including, but not limited to:
- Deep-cleaning projects including, carpets and floors
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, offices and related facilities as assigned;
- Sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors by hand or machine and vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas;
- Spot clean and shampoo carpets; spot mop spills;
- Remove debris; dust and polish furniture and woodwork;
- Clean whiteboards; clean lunch tables, benches and eating areas; clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks and toilets; clean mirrors, tile, doors, ceilings, windows and walls;
- Fill dispensers with towels, soap and toilet paper
- Collect and dispose of waste
- Deliver a variety of materials as requested; Move equipment and materials within and between locations
Accountability and General Administration
- Maintain a neat and orderly work environment
- Support staff as needed
- Attend and participate in all required meetings, trainings, and school functions; Promote and participate in the creative exchange of ideas
- Observe confidentiality
- Return all correspondence, including phone calls and emails, in a timely manner; Be accessible during business hours and respond to administrative needs and inquiries
- Comply with the Organization’s Safety Plan
Public Relations
- Develop positive relationships with parents and general public associated with the organization
- Communicate and support the school’s mission, policies, and procedures
- Represent Element Education and its programs in a positive and professional manner
- Assist with maintaining a positive and effective work environment; Treat all staff with respect, provide opportunities for participation in decision making, and be responsive to the human needs of staff members
Professional and Organizational Development
- In collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, plan for own career growth and ongoing professional development
- Seek innovative approaches to self-directed learning and formal training
- All other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- One year of experience performing basic maintenance and custodial work
- Knowledge of proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work and non-technical maintenance including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures
- Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance work including, but not limited to, plumbing, drywall, carpentry, and electrical
- Knowledge of requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
- Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures including proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies; proper lifting techniques
- Ability to observe and report the need for maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of cleaning and waxing compounds, heating and ventilating equipment, floor buffers and custodial equipment, and basic tools utilized in building maintenance
- Familiarity and commitment to the mission and educational philosophy of Element Education
- Ability to remotely and/or virtually perform duties and attend meetings, as needed
- Ability to maintain records as directed by supervisor
- Ability to exercise emotional maturity in communicating with students, parents, and colleagues
- Demonstrate knowledge of technology and MaintainX software

Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and clean driving record
Upon Hire/Offer:
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification
- Proof that employee is free of active tuberculosis (i.e. TB risk assessment, TB test, chest X-ray, etc.)
- Successful background clearance
Full-Time Salary: $33,322 - $51,693 per year
Part-Time Salary: $16.02 - $24.85 per hour

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud. The employee may experience heat or cold extremes as well as fumes, odors, and dust.
This position works in a variety of settings which include Element Education, Inc. facility buildings throughout San Diego County.
