Metallurgy Instructor

(part-time, contract position)

at MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute (Carlsbad, CA)

 

POSITION DETAILS:

The Community Education and Workforce Development Department at MiraCosta College is looking for an expert in the field of Metallurgy to teach a small cohort of students in the areas listed below.  This position requires a total of 95 instructional hours for a limited contractual time period, with work hours during the week-days, and beginning as soon as possible. 

 

This course introduces students to the study of the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Specific topics include:

 

• Descriptions of high-temperature metallurgical processes

• Thermodynamic aspects of metals processing

• Phase diagrams, phase transformations, and the prediction of metal properties

• Measurement and estimation of physical properties of metals at high temperatures

• Transport phenomena and metals properties

• Interfacial phenomena, metals processing and properties

• The kinetics of metallurgical reactions

 

This program is a short course (non-credit) that will have a rigorous curriculum with an accelerated pace to assist students as part of an apprenticeship program.

 

COMPENSATION: 

Salary is negotiable from $50 - $90 per hour.  Short-term, temporary employees may be eligible for Healthy Families Sick Leave, and enrollment in a retirement system.

 

WORK LOCATION: 

MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute in Carlsbad, California. This MiraCosta College site is a state-of-the-art work skills training facility housing many accelerated training programs in Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Emerging Technologies.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Community Education and Workforce Development:

• Assist in the preparation of program curriculum design.

• Establish an inclusive environment in the classroom.

• Strive for excellence in teaching, applying best practices in field of discipline, and modeling behaviors that encourage student success and retention.

• Demonstrate a sense of connection and responsibility for helping the College to achieve success through a commitment to its mission, vision, and values.

• Communicate effectively, share vision, focus on people, initiate positive change, value differences, and foster collaboration.

• Work with and inspire others to achieve college, department, and individual success. Proactively identify/address problems.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in metal working and/or aerospace metallurgy with an expert knowledge of metallurgy.

• Associate’s degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.

• Two (2) years of teaching experience.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

• Operation experience with metals or expertise in metallurgy.

• Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Ability to work as part of a team.

• Experience in developing curriculum to be taught on this subject matter.
