Jurupa Unified School District STUDENT ATTENDANT AIDE DEFINITION Under general supervision, to assist a certificated teacher or other professional staff in the supervision and instruction of individual students in regular or special education classrooms or other designated settings; to relieve the teacher of routine clerical duties; and to do related work as required. Assignments are made to a variety of sites throughout the district and may involve interaction with students ranging from pre-schoolers to adults. The sample duties listed below represent a wide range of activities that may be assigned depending on the needs and circumstances of the particular job function. SITE Education Support Services Department (Education Center) – Specific site location is tentative and subject to change. Aides are subject to reassignment at any time, based on student needs. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS* · Understands and utilizes basic instructional and remedial methods, techniques and materials appropriate to individual students, to accomplish instructional and behavioral objectives · Assists in adapting instructional and behavioral strategies and materials according to the needs of the individual learner · Supervises individual students in the classroom, at lunch, at recess, on the playground, on the bus to and from school, and on field trips · Assists in modifying the learning environment to change behaviors of an individual student · Provides support and assistance to the teacher as needed · Performs other related duties as assigned OTHER FUNCTIONS Clerical · Prepares forms, tests, and worksheets · Assists with routine clerical duties related to classroom work · Keeps anecdotal notes and maintains student files · Attends and participates in planning student evaluation sessions Related · Sets up work areas and prepare materials for class use · Attends and participates in program planning sessions and IEP meetings for individual students as necessary · Attends in-service workshops · Assists with individual student toileting needs as directed by supervisor · Performs other related duties as assigned DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Subject areas, general needs and behavior of children English usage, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic STUDENT ATTENDANT AIDE (continued) DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Subject areas, general needs and behavior of children English usage, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic Ability to: Understand and respond with sensitivity to the conditions and requirements of special needs children; Use good consistent judgment in the solution of problems; Work effectively under often-stressful conditions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and staff; Read, write and compute at the eighth grade level; Remain flexible despite frequent schedule changes or job duty changes; Keep simple records and reports; Read and comprehend handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various equipment and machines; Lift, move, or push or pull cart with light to medium weight objects such as classroom equipment in a safe efficient manner; Demonstrate motor skills and mobility sufficient to participate in the educational process; Concentrate on current task in spite of distractions in an active, busy environment; Deal with hostile, emotional, angry or ill persons in an effective manner; Effectively perform intervention procedures to prevent fights and other altercations; Demonstrated proficiency and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics; Maintain regular, steady attendance. Experience: Previous experience working with special needs children in a behavioral setting or program is desirable. Demonstrated capability for working with professional educators, administrators and other school officials. Education: Graduation from high school or its equivalent (minimum requirements may be subject to future change by federal or state policy or regulation). Personal Qualities: Adaptability, flexibility, good judgment, pleasant demeanor, dependability, ability to work effectively under pressure and the ability to work independently while implementing instructional plans and priorities. *PLEASE NOTE: This classification is assigned to a variety of individual special needs students in the district.
