General Description

Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Grossmont College's Visual Arts and Humanities Department offers instruction and degree pathways in Art History and Studio Arts, including Ceramics, Digital Art, Drawing & Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Jewelry. The Sculpture Program is held in its own 5,000 square foot building with two separate classroom/workshop spaces as well as an adjoining 10,000 square foot fabrication yard and foundry.

Job Description

Grossmont College seeks a teaching artist with the ability to provide conceptual and technical instruction in traditional, interdisciplinary and emerging sculptural practices with a focus on engagement in social analysis and cultural critique. The fundamentals of 3D and sculpture are set within a series of courses which reference the rich history of three-dimensional practice in relationship to contemporary approaches, including casting, fabrication, foundry and public art/installation. With such an intensive program of study, students have the opportunity to define their path, whether it is to transfer to a four-year institution, portfolio and professional career development and/or personal enrichment.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience teaching foundation and intermediate-level courses in 3D design and sculpture while actively participating in the development of interdisciplinary art and sculpture curriculum. In addition, the successful candidate will collaborate with a full-time sculpture technician in overseeing the studio classroom/workshop and fabrication yard and foundry.

Demonstrated experience in managing and maintaining workshop equipment and materials is preferred. Experience in training students, student workers, and instructors on the proper and safe use of workshop equipment and materials is required. In addition to teaching a full-time load of 18 contact hours, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in curriculum development and assessment and contribute to departmental and campus activities that support the college mission.

Master's in Fine Arts, OR

Master's in Art, Art History AND Bachelor's in any of the above OR

The equivalent.

Necessary Qualifications - The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

Subject Area Knowledge & Competency

• Strong record of professional and teaching excellence as demonstrated by a portfolio of exhibition work as well as a portfolio of student work.

• Knowledge about contemporary art issues and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological forces.

• An ability to teach both the Elements and Principles of 3D Design as they relate to a range of sculpture-based courses.

• An ability to work with and teach different materials utilizing the additive and subtractive approaches of art-making along with basic casting techniques.

• A deep understanding of the history of sculpture and public art along with contemporary/interdisciplinary sculpture practices.

• Proficiency in time-based and emerging sculptural techniques.

• An ability to teach a range of 3D media, including but not limited to woodworking, welding, metal fabrication, mold-making, casting, and assemblage using metals, plastics, wood, clay, and/or plaster in addition to teaching foundry techniques.

• At least three years of experience working with and teaching the use of tools, machinery, and equipment related to sculpture, such as power saws, belt sanders, welding machines, plasma cutters, furnaces, and kilns as well as implementing safety measures and instruction within a classroom/workshop and/or fabrication yard and foundry.

• Knowledge of public art theory as applied to planning of and applying for commissions in a public context.

• Ability to develop curriculum and use a variety of teaching strategies that motivate learning for community college students from a broad spectrum of cultural, socio-economic, academic, and language backgrounds.

• Evidence of effective communication skills (interpersonal, speaking, and writing).

• Ability to establish and maintain an engaging and supportive classroom environment.

Commitment to Professional Growth and Service

• Ability to work in a collaborative environment and to participate in departmental and institutional committee service and scheduled departmental and student activities.

• Initiate and organize activities for sculpture students and as part of the broader collaboration between Visual Arts and Humanities programs and the campus wide community.

Potential for Overall College Effectiveness

• Ability to cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and the local community.

Understanding Diversity

• Personal commitment to teaching on a college level using equity-minded approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, age, socioeconomic status, disability, and sexual orientation, and the intersections of these markers.

Other Qualifications

• Experience in craft-based approaches and digital advances in sculpture.

• Demonstrated track record of exhibiting sculpture.

• Commitment to student recruitment and retention.

• Experience with computerized student record management and/or course management platforms.
