Job Description

San Bernardino Valley College is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution with a majority of our students identifying themselves as either African-American/Black or Latinx. We are seeking individuals to join our Biology department team that are fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education in a collegial and collaborative student-centered environment.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

This posting is to fill two (2) full-time, tenure track position teaching in the Biology department. This Biology position will instruct courses in the following focus area: Anatomy, Physiology and General Biology for non-majors. Faculty positions may require work to be performed during evenings and/or weekends.

• Reflect on institutional and teaching practices and aim to make them more culturally responsive

• Strategically build buy-in and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by the incumbent(s)of any particular position. • Biology Instructors provide instruction and mentorship to students pursuing degrees in Biology, Environmental Science, and Chemistry, students fulfilling general education requirements in life sciences, and students pursuing allied health fields.

• Implement analytical skill building in the Biology lab setting

• Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours

• Participate and collaborate in biology team, department, and division meetings

• Assist in curriculum development, updates, and revisions

• Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs

 

• Provides assistance and mentorship to part-time instructors.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

• Knowledge of a variety of evidence-based teaching techniques appropriate to meet students where they are and guide their development appropriate to their goals

• Communicate effectively to students at the general education level, as well as science majors and allied health majors

• Demonstrate currency about current biology issues and in the context of evolutionary biology along with development of investigative lecture and laboratory exercises.

• Commitment to actively participate and contribute to changes in the Biology program at department and team meetings.

• Commitment to supporting gender and ethnically diverse students enrolled in biology

• Actively manage consistent and appropriate guidance of student progress in the lab setting

• Ability to use teaching methods that engage all students actively in their own learning and encourage them in the development of problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills

• Ability to teach in both in-person and virtual environments

• Ability to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students

• Ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills in both lab and virtual settings

• Willingness to work with both faculty and staff collegially at department, division, college, and District levels

• Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy, plan and implement a course of action to modify techniques of actively engaging students

• A familiarity with and willingness to appropriately expand the use of computer-based technology appropriate in the field of biology

• A commitment to the SBCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum

• A commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

• Be familiar with qualitative and quantitative data analysis

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in biological science OR Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent*.

*If you believe to have the experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications for an academic position, you may request a determination of equivalency by completing a District Request for Equivalency form and provide supporting documentation as appropriate.

 

Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

DESIRED QUALIFICATION/S

 

• A minimum of one full year teaching experience with some experience with face-to-face classroom experience.

• Experience teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology and/or Organismal Biology.

• Demonstrate practice of culturally responsive education in various areas of Biology.

• Demonstrate practice of evidence-based active teaching and learning methods and innovative ideas for the Biology curriculum in both in-person and virtual environments.

• Maintains currency in the biological sciences and incorporates advances and discoveries into curriculum for both lecture and laboratory.

• Demonstrates ongoing professional commitment and updating to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession.

Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.

Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)

Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment

Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule)
