Job Summary:
Under direction, performs journey-level work in the repair, inspection, servicing and alteration of District heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning systems and related equipment and facilities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Diagnoses problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning/refrigeration systems for the purpose of identifying repair and replacement needs necessary to maintain equipment and systems.
- Maintains heating/air conditioning/refrigeration equipment and systems for the purpose of providing comfort inside facilities.
- Maintains heating/air conditioning systems and components, and obsolete equipment for the purpose of ensuring proper/safe and efficient operation of equipment.
- Monitors equipment supply, tools and materials for the purpose of maintaining and ensuring availability of required items and adequate supply of materials in order to complete assignments efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Orients staff for the purpose of providing information on proper operation of the equipment.
- Records work orders for the purpose of documenting information for other personnel.
- Responds to emergency situations as assigned for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
- Transports various items (e.g. equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of providing materials at job sites as required to complete tasks.
Other Job Functions:
- Assists and coordinates with district personnel and other trades' staff for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities; and, completing projects/work orders efficiently.
- Attends training programs, workshops, meeting, etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and ensuring compliance with district, local, state and federal requirements.
Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:
- Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skill to operate hand and power tools used in craft; read and interpret schematics, perform basic math to make calculations. Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic applications to HVAC field, codes and regulations relative to HVAC field, boiler operation, water treatment, basic computer operation. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions, work independently with minimal supervision.
- Physical Requirements: Employees in this classification stand, walk, sit, use fingers repetitively, use wrists or hands repetitively in a twisting motion or while applying pressure, use both hands simultaneously, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, lift moderately heavy objects; good speaking and hearing abilities; bending at the waist, kneeling and crouching; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; stooping; ascending and descending stairs. Persons with certain disabilities may be capable of performing the duties of the classification; have the ability to occasionally lift moderately heavy objects weighing up to 130 pounds, frequently lift up to 50pounds and constantly lift a minimum of 26 pounds; have the capability to push 45 pounds maximum force and possess the capability to pull 45 pounds maximum force. Such determination must be made on an individual basis by the District’s medical examiner, taking into consideration the nature of the disability, prosthetic aid and the duties of this position.
- Work Environment: Employees in this classification work inside with exposure to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.) in direct contact with the public and other District staff, without direct guidance from supervisor, with a high volume of work and tight deadlines, continuous changing priorities and interruptions. May require exposure to extreme weather conditions for moderate periods of time. Hazards = Noise: Compressors. Vibration: Electric drill, power tools. Mechanical hazards: fans, fan belts. Electrical: Electrical panels, power tools. Radiant Energy: Furnace, heating, etc. Burns: Soldering, hot parts. Other Hazards: Slippery, uneven surfaces, trips, fall. Other atmospheric conditions include Fumes: Soldering. Mists: Steam. Odors & Gases: Refrigerants, etc. Poor Ventilation: Machine rooms. Protective Clothing/Devices: Safety glasses/goggles, gloves.
- Education and Training Required: High School graduate or equivalent including three (3) years journey-level experience in the HVAC trade and possession of Type I and Type II Refrigerant Handling Certification.
- Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
- Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance.
- Valid California driver's license.
- Tuberculosis clearance.
- Written examination.
