The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2020/2021 academic year, we enrolled over 21,500 students in which 60% identify as Latinx, 12% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 18% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial. Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean, Students at Fresno City College, the Counselor for Retention & Student Success will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities including academic, career and personal counseling to a diverse student population. The counselor will be responsible for:
• Providing comprehensive counseling services for new students and assisting in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, assessment, counseling, & follow-up services, including continuing students;
• Assisting students in selection of courses, developing student education plans (SEPs) and career exploration related to educational goals;
• Assisting in developing programs and student support services that will improve student access to college, increase student retention and completion rates;
• Assisting in the development, implementation of the college early alert system, and provision of services for students on academic probation including, but not limited to workshops and one-on-one advising;
• Coordinating and working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives, and provision of counseling in support of guided pathways and other programs, including but not limited to summer bridge/first year experience programs;
• Referring students to on-campus academic and student support services including, Admissions & Records, EOPS, CalWORKs, DSP&S, Financial Aid, Student Success Centers, Veterans and off-campus community resources;
• Providing assistance to new and prospective students with college applications and college orientation;
• Developing and facilitating individual & group workshops to local high schools and community agencies;
• Providing training and program updates to counselors, instructional faculty, and student support staff;
• Assisting and participating in preparation of program reviews, assessing & developing student learning outcomes to improve student learning, as it relates to counseling, preparing annual program updates, and evaluations;
• Teaching counseling and personal development courses such as career planning and academic success;
• Serving on college-wide committees, attending faculty meetings, as necessary to support and enrich college programs, activities and student success initiatives;
• Complying with District policies and procedures in the performance of all duties;
• Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus, and large group instruction classes as needed; and
• Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;
OR
• A valid California Community College Credential;
OR
• The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.
(NOTE: a bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Desirable Qualifications:
• Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
• Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
• Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
• Related work and professional experience;
• Knowledge of issues affecting the potential of low-income and/or potential first generation college bound students in grant funded programs;
• Proven sensitivity to students from diverse educational and economic backgrounds;
• Experience developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
• General understanding of Financial Aid Programs including applications and eligibility;
• Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;
• Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
• Experience in conducting workshops and teaching courses in career and personal development;
• Proficient utilizing available computer applications and technology related to program coordination, counseling, and instruction
• Experience implementing retention strategies;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
• Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
• Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
177-181 duty days per year.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting annual salary is $60,678 – $93,414 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
