We serve approximately 6,300 students who matriculate into the Whittier Union High School District. The Bilingual Instructional Aide works under general supervision, to perform a variety of ELD (English Language Development) instructional activities; perform a variety of supportive tasks and follow-up activities; serve as an interpreter and translator for parents and community members with limited English speaking ability, and do other related work as required.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
o Pass District bilingual proficiency exam
o Coursework or training in child growth and development instructional processes
desirable
o Pass District Proficiency exam
Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the law requires that paraprofessionals who assist in classroom instruction must meet the following requirements:
NCLB Compliant by January 2006 (AA degree, 48 college semester units and proof of high school graduation)

Experience
A typical qualifying entrance background is experience working with children acquiring English and intervention instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
o Assists instructional personnel in the implementation of individual educational plans
for students experiencing bilingual instructional needs
o Tutors individuals and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities
o Assists students in the development of appropriate social behaviors
o Performs a variety of behavior management and behavior shaping functions
o Assists in the implementation of specialized instructional materials
o Assists in the maintenance of student records and files
o Assists in the implementation of testing programs
o Assists in the development and maintenance of a learning environment
o Performs a variety of tasks such as taking roll and completing forms

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
o Bilingual (Spanish) required, test given
o Child development and behavior characteristics
o Behavior management and instructional strategies and techniques
o Appropriate English usage, (punctuation, spelling, grammar), and second language usage, as appropriate to the assignment), District proficiency exam given
o Basic mathematical concepts
o Routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures
Ability to:
o Demonstrate an empathetic, patient, and receptive attitude with all students
o Interpret, understand, and follow specific student educational plans and courses of study
o Communicate satisfactorily in oral and written form in English and a second language as required by the assignment, and to serve as an appropriate language model
o Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment
o Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of an educational environment
o Understand and carry out oral and written directions
o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
o Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force
o This type of work involves sitting little of the time, and may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods
o Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job
