LIBRARY ASSISTANT I
Definition:
Under supervision, this position provides general library cataloging, processing, and clerical and repair work according to specific routines. This is an entry-level Library position. Employees in this classification may be promoted to Library Assistant II or III with demonstrated aptitude and public service proficiency.
Supervision Exercised and Received:
An employee in this classification receives supervision from the Branch Librarian within a broad framework of policies and procedures.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
„h Assists patrons with locating books, charging and discharging books
„h Provides simple/basic computer support as time allows
LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists patrons with locating books, charging and discharging books
- Provides simple/basic computer support as time allows
- Researches and responds to reference questions, referring complicated or difficult questions to more experienced staff
- Requests library materials not located in the branch collection for patrons
- Shelves books and other library materials
- Catalogs new and donated books for the collection from existing records
- Processes new and donated books to be added to the collection
- Repairs and refurbishes damaged materials
- Helps with programs in the branch, including story hour and the Summer Reading program
- Prepares end-of-month accounting and circulation reports
- Receives, disseminates, and returns library materials between Mono County Library patrons and other libraries
- Helps to keep the library accessible, comfortable and welcoming to the public
- Other duties as may be assigned and/or required.
Knowledge of:
- Modern library, public service, and computer technology – including techniques, skills, procedures and programs – required
Ability to:
- Use Excel, Word or other database programs at an input rate of 40-50 words per minute
- Spell correctly and use good English
- Perform a variety of reference tasks, including reference work, interlibrary loans, bibliographic verification
- Understand and follow directions
- Bilingual desirable
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated public-service proficiency
- Knowledge of computer use
Physical Requirements:
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including lifting 25 pounds frequently and 55 pounds on an occasional basis and in excess of 55 pounds with assistance. Ability to work at a desk; ability to stand for extended periods of time; ability to see for purposes of reading rules and policies and other printed matter; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand; ability to operate office equipment; ability to bend and twist; ability to reach in all directions.
Other Requirements:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license
- TB testing
- Fingerprint background check
- Compliance with the MCOE dress code and other policies
Probationary Period: One Year
Salary Range: 42
