Basic Functions
JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW:
The Network Specialist will help lead IT Security efforts at Santa Barbara City College, reporting directly to the Director of IT Infrastructure and Security. The successful candidate will be responsible for securing the network by enforcing policies, analyzing security events/threats, monitoring access and responding to security events. This position works closely with other IT groups and end-user departments on recommending and implementing security projects and solutions for the district.
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of an assigned administrator, design network configurations to meet Collegewide data needs; select and distribute new or upgraded software; maintain, install, and upgrade network servers, storage systems, backup solutions and network infrastructure; plan and implement security devices; monitor and maintain technical telecommunications networks.
Representative Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Design network configurations to meet College-wide data needs.
Select and distribute new or upgraded software; maintain, install, and upgrade network servers, storage systems, backup solutions and network infrastructure.
Monitor, maintain and install the telecommunications systems College-wide; oversee the
configuration of telecommunications line; maintain related documentation and records.
Evaluate, select and distribute new or upgraded software; assure consistency of operations with desktop standards.
Perform on-going needs analysis for network and communications infrastructure and capacities.
Perform and lead special projects including network planning, design and infrastructure analysis.
Design, install, operate and troubleshoot network hardware, cabling, servers and software; install network servers and other devices; maintain network security; develop network architecture and infrastructure to support applications.
Plan and implement security devices; review log files from various security devices; adjust
devices as necessary using editing software; analyze suspicious network activity; maintain virus protection.
Interact with technical services staff to discuss hardware and software malfunctions and
determine appropriate course of action; prioritize identified problems and track their resolution.
Install, configure, and support software applications and systems as assigned.
Maintain current and accurate technical documentation for assigned activities; develop and
enforce standards for technical documentation.
Back up and restore server data.
Maintain contact with departments campus-wide to resolve network system issues.
Ensure compliance to established computing security standards and procedures.
Maintain current knowledge of telecommunications technology and trends.
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to: associate's degree in computer science or related field and five years experience in a network services or support function.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of Community College Students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• One or more of the following certifications in Security/Networking are highly desired: CISSP, Security+, Network+, CCNA, GCIA, GCIH, or other security specific certifications.
• Qualified candidates will have:
• Experience with network design in a campus-wide environment including required resilience, redundancy and security to support instructional technology, campus portal systems, distance education, student services and enterprise administrative systems
• Demonstrable knowledge of the 20 CIS Controls and how to implement them.
• Experience in deployment and support of networking protocols/hardware, firewalls, wireless, virtualization, servers, and desktop computing (Windows and Mac) in an enterprise environment.
• Fundamental understanding of how to secure these technologies.
• Strong knowledge of information and data security, trends, tools, threats and defense resolution techniques.
• Strong understanding of network security vulnerabilities and remediation, to include experience with identifying, reporting, investigating and responding to security breaches and network incidents.
• Ability to support and communicate effectively with all levels of end users.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
WORKING HOURS:Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hours may vary, 12 months per year, plus fringe benefits; 6 month probation period. All work schedules and work assignments are subject to change based on the needs of the college. SALARY INFORMATION:
The current salary schedule range for the Network Specialist is Salary Table 29, Range 43, $78,841-$89,171. Nine step salary range continues to a maximum of $96,053. Initial salary placement based on experience with annual advancement to the next higher step.

Operate LANs, microcomputers and peripheral equipment.

Selection Procedure:
The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the hiring manager for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
