Applications are now being accepted for a 12 month Assistant Professor/DSPS Counselor position at San Diego Mesa College beginning Fall 2022 Mesa College is the largest of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District with a student population of approximately 24,000 and may include a combination of day, weekend and evening hours.
While the current vacancy exists at San Diego Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
Major Responsibilities:
Provide academic, career, personal and disability management counseling to students with disabilities. This includes, but not limited to, the initial intake interview, collection and analysis of verification of disability documentations to determine eligibility for services; develop student educational contract, individual counseling, group presentations, instructions; recommendation and provision of academic accommodations required by the ADA, ADAA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Section 508 and FERPA.
Prepare written reports and maintain confidential student records in compliance with state and federal requirements.
Collaborate with college faculty, community agencies and education institutions.
Assist in the development and administer and implementation of program goals and SLO’s.
The individual must effectively utilize a personal computer in a professional office environment, utilize effective written and oral communication skills; establish and maintain collegiate working relationships with faculty, staff, administration, community agencies and education institutions and demonstrate sensitivity to a diverse student population.
Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; maintain current knowledge of disability related laws, district policies and procedures and all subject matter areas.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Rehabilitation Counseling; OR,
2. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Special Education, and twenty four or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work; OR,
3. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Counseling, Guidance, Student Personnel, Psychology, Career Development, or Social Welfare; AND, either twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; OR, (B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities; OR,
4. Possession of a California Community College Credential as a Disability Support Programs and Services Counselor (valid for life); AND,
5. Completion of California Community College Chancellor’s Office “Learning Disabilities Eligibility Model Training” OR fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities; AND,
6. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Foreign Degrees: Applicants with foreign degrees from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have their coursework evaluated by a professional association. A copy of the evaluation must be submitted with the application packet.
Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of
professional expertise on the basis of:
• Awareness and commitment to the philosophy and objectives of the California Community Colleges.
• Experience with reporting to an outside government agency.
• Knowledge of and experience in community agencies related to people with disabilities.
• Thorough knowledge of issues and appropriate accommodations related to a wide variety of disabilities.
• Effective written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Evidence of ability to synthesize diverse information, make timely decisions and implement chosen course of action.
• Ability to problem-solve, engage in the interactive process and serve as an advocate for adults with disabilities.
• Experience in the use of adaptive computer technology as a teaching tool, use of teaching activities.
• Experience in community college counseling; including personal, career, academic and disability management.
• Willingness to participate effectively in shares governance.
• Vision and energy to plan and implement programs to enhance student success.
Licenses:
Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A – Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 – $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
