RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervision of the Head Mechanic repair, overhaul and maintain engine powered equipment, to assist mechanics in the repair and maintenance of district school buses, general vehicles and motorized equipment, perform welding assignments, and to do related work as required. Specific Duties Include: • Perform mechanical work; repair and rebuild to maintain equipment in an operating status • Make decisions as to extent and type of repairs necessary • Overhaul and tune engines • Adjust clutches and brakes • Lubricate and change oil and oil filters • Order parts and accessories • Care for and maintain shop tools and equipment in working condition and maintain clean work area • Sharpen and make repairs and perform scheduled maintenance on mowers • Make alterations and additions to equipment when necessary • Assist mechanic with preventive maintenance and safety check to school buses • Maintain maintenance and service records as directed • Assist mechanics when necessary in the repair of school bus components • Perform light mechanical work during the absence of a mechanic • Perform troubleshooting and diagnosis problems occurring in the daily operation of school buses • Serve as emergency mechanic under the direction of the Lead Mechanic and/or Transportation Supervisor • Insure the proper disposal of hazardous materials to meet established rules and regulations, and keep accurate records of disposal • Furnish own hand tools • Other duties as assigned
