Basic FunctionUnder the direction of the Director of Transportation or designee, performs journey level skilled and complextroubleshooting, repairs, and overhaul of buses, light trucks, passenger vans, and light equipment; maintainsrecords of work performed; and performs related work as assigned. Assistant Vehicle Mechanic may be requiredto operate a school bus as deemed necessary.Education and Experience

? High school diploma or equivalent.? Valid California Class B-PS driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.? School bus special driver certificate for Type I bus issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicle.? Current certificate of training in first aid and current medical certificate of physical health signed by alicensed physician.? At least two years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair or similar related experience.

? Experience working for a school district or public transportation entity preferred.Primary Duties? Routine repair and maintenance of the District's “white fleet” vehicles.? Road tests, inspects and troubleshoots buses, vans, light trucks and equipment, and small equipment toassess their condition and determine needed repairs.? Maintain the District vehicle safety equipment.? Tunes, repairs, and prepares gasoline and diesel engines for overhaul.? Adjusts, repairs, replaces and/or rebuilds carburetors, fuel injection systems, and other fuel systemcomponents.? Installs, troubleshoots, adjusts, replaces, repairs, and rewires electrical systems and components, such asignition, relays, regulators, and electrical controls, including computer controlled components.? Changes transmission mounts, detents, and controls; replaces and adjusts clutches; removes andreplaces transmissions.? Adjusts, disassembles, and repairs or rebuilds drum and disk braking systems, valves, master cylinders,and pneumatic or other hydraulic controls.? Repairs and replaces suspension and steering components.? Repairs and rebuilds hydraulic and pneumatic apparatus such as backhoes, loaders, booms, and lifts,and prepares cylinders for precision grinding.? Uses welding and cutting equipment for repairs, modification, and fabrication.? Maintains records and inventory.? May be required to drive a school bus on an assigned route, or student activity trip as needed.? May operate other District vehicles as deemed necessary.? Perform other related duties as assigned.Knowledge & AbilitiesKnowledge of:? Principles, practices, methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of buses, andlight trucks and equipment, including hydraulics.? Operating principles of internal combustion engines and vehicle and equipment systems andcomponents.? Use, adjustment, and care of hand and power tools common to the trade.? Principles and practices of gasoline and diesel engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul.
Ability to:? Troubleshoot, diagnose, test, repair and perform preventive maintenance to gasoline and dieselpowered buses, vans, light trucks and equipment.? Test, troubleshoot, making repairs to, and perform preventive maintenance on transmissions and fuel,ignition, electrical, electronic, steering, suspension, hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, coolant, airconditioning, power take off drives, large transmissions, and other automotive and equipment systems.? Operate diagnostic, testing, and troubleshooting equipment.? Operate welding equipment and a variety of power tools.? Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee tosuccessfully perform the essential functions of this job.? Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power tools and equipment.? Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.? Seeing to observe and perform repairs.? Lifting/carrying 164 pounds occasionally, 100 pounds frequently, and 30 pounds constantly.? Requires pushing/pulling a maximum force of 65 pounds on objects.? Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching,? Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.? Climbing ladders.Hazards:? Exposure to chemical fumes and vapors.? Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.? Working around or with machinery having moving parts.? Working with hazardous materials.
