POSITION: ACADEMIC/GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

 West Park Charter Academy

CLASSIFICATION: CERTIFICATED (200 DAYS)

Full-Time/8 Hours Per Day

RESPONSIBLE TO: Charter Director

SALARY: To Be Placed on Certificated Salary Schedule

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Provide academic counseling and guidance services to students; make referrals to other community resources, support groups and social service agencies as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:


  • Monitor the academic progress of students

  • Identify students at-risk of not graduating

  • Review individual pupil’s academic records

  • Meet with each pupil and the pupil’s parent/guardian to explain the academic records, coursework, and academic progress needed for satisfactory completion of middle or high school.

  • Review the pupil’s district and state assessment scores and assist with coordinating academic support services

  • Assist the students to make a successful transition to postsecondary education or employment.

  • Provide the student and parents/guardian with the student’s transcript and keep a copy in the student’s cumulative file.

  • Provide grade 12 students with options for continuing his or her education if he or she fails to meet graduation requirements.

  • Utilize diagnostic and assessment procedures as appropriate.

  • Conference with all at-risk students and the parent/guardian

    • Conferences will advise pupil and parent/guardian of:

      • Program and course options available 

      • Review remediation strategies, high school courses and options available to the pupil 

      • Review pupil’s transcripts, and standardized/diagnostic assessments with pupil and parent/guardian.

      • Review information of postsecondary education and training

  • Assist with program events (i.e. high school graduation ceremony, 8th grade promotion ceremony, Career Days, Senior Portfolio Interviews, etc.)

  • Assist with other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:


Knowledge of the College/Career Indicator Model (including the CA Dashboard).Diagnose reasons for student problems and assist students in exploring alternative solution.  Assist students in developing a positive self-mage.  Make appropriate referrals to FCSS psychologist or other specialist when deemed necessary.  Function as a liaison between students, teachers, administrator and parents.  Help students develop appropriate educational planning by means of course selection.  Communicate information on graduation requirements and monitor student progress.  Provide interpretation of test scores.  Assist students develop appropriate educational planning by means of course selection.  Communicate information on graduation requirements and monitor student progress.  Provide interpretation of test scores.  Assist students with college and career planning.  Complete required reports and maintain files of useful information for each student.  Perform other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Valid California Teaching Credential (Preferred)

Valid California Pupil Personnel Credential (Required)

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

May require a valid driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.  Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Eyesight corrected or uncorrected to read fine print.  Hearing with or without the use of hearing aid sufficient to hear telephone conversation.  Understandable voice and speech patterns.  Physical stamina to sit and/or stand for extended period of time.
