Job Summary

The Government Relations Department of the San Diego Unified School District serves as the primary liaison for the District with federal, state and local government officials and agencies. The Department maintains an active office in Sacramento to manage, review and advance San Diego Unified School District's fiscal and policy priorities pertaining to all state legislation and funding proposals affecting K-12 education. The Department also monitors federal legislation affecting education and maintains the District's relationship with Congressional representatives. As the second largest school district in California, San Diego Unified is in a unique position to advocate for sound policies that affect our public schools and K-12 students across San Diego. The District is seeking experienced candidates to apply for the position of Director, Government Relations. The successful candidate will represent and serve as the advocate for the District to State legislators on issues, policies and laws affecting the interests and welfare of the District; cultivate and maintain ongoing liaison with State legislators representing the District; conduct joint outreach efforts with other government agencies for the benefit of the District; and perform related duties as required. Candidates must have knowledge of district organization and objectives and have policy analysis and development experience. Exceptional oral and written English communication skills is also required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of training, education, and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, industrial relations, business administration or a closely related field and two years of professional policy analysis or legislative liaison experience, preferably in a California government agency. An advanced degree in education, political science, public policy, a closely related field, or law degree and/or passage of the bar exam is preferable. LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver’s license. Frequent travel.
