BEHAVIOR TECHNICIAN

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates the skills, abilities and personal characteristics necessary for successful performance with individuals who display significant behavioral/emotional concerns.

Education:
AA Degree preferred but not required.

Knowledge of or potential to develop an understanding of:
Physical, emotional and mental disabilities; basic record keeping; behavior management strategies and techniques and a variety of reinforcement methods and strategies; methods, techniques and procedures for de-escalating children in crisis situations.

Ability to:
Work with a high degree of independence in performing assigned duties; demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward individuals with exceptional needs; manage behavior appropriately and guide individuals with exceptional needs toward more acceptable social behaviors; learn the fundamentals of behavior assessment; communicate effectively in oral and written form; respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations, administering first aid as necessary; document, record and keep copies of pupil activities and behavior.

Physical demands and working conditions:
Must be able to work cooperatively and patiently with individuals who have various disabilities which reduce their rate of learning; May ride a bus which transports handicapped individuals, securing individuals on bus and caring for individuals during trips; required from time to time to participate in special training programs, and to obtain training to perform specific health care and behavioral related tasks.

• Ability to relate positively to children with mild to severe handicaps.
• A general understanding of the needs of students with Autism.
• Ability to implement basic teaching techniques (i.e. counting money, addition problems, alphabet recognition) to meet individual’s needs.
• Willingness and ability to collaborate with classroom teachers, aides and all IEP team members (i.e. parents, administrators, BICM, psychologist).
• Maintain flexibility during schedule changes.
• Willingness and ability to deal with acting out individuals engaged in verbal and/or physically aggressive behavior.



JOB FUNCTION/DUTIES:
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs a variety of functions and activities pertaining to the care, instruction and behavioral needs of children diagnosed with Autism or Serious Emotional Disturbances.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The tasks listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to position in this class. This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the tasks assigned to positions in this class, and it is not expected that all tasks listed be necessarily assigned to all positions in this class.

• Documenting and keeping copies of records or student activities and behavior; works with individuals or groups to reinforce and follow up learning and training activities; monitors and assists individuals in a variety of self-help activities including dressing, feeding and toileting; aids and assists individuals who experience toileting accidents and who have limited control of body functions; directs individuals into safe social activities and assists them with an appropriate variety of learning aids; assists in the development of communication skills with individuals who experience language and hearing disorders; performs routine first aide functions which may include emergency treatment of individuals experiencing seizures or respiratory problems; may participate in parent conferences, as requested; performs other related work as required; applies positive interventions and follows emergency procedures according to direction, law and district policy (i.e. CPI techniques).
• Use key concepts to describe and discuss student behavior (i.e. Applied Behavior Analysis terms).
• Effectively recognizes school environment factors which may prompt a specific behavior (i.e. schedules changes, sensory overload – bell, lawn mowing, and alarm sounding).
• Anticipates specific behaviors for specific conditions and implements a consistent routine for such events.
• Maintains appropriate affect towards the student.
• Able to regulate positive vocal tone when student is maintaining positive behavior
• Maintains a reliable and valid data log for behaviors


SELECTION PROCESS:
SCREENING: Applicants will be screened and tested with a minimum passing score of 70% or higher for minimum qualifications and experience; if minimum qualifications and/or experience are not met, applicant will be notified they have been screened out of further processing.

INTERVIEW: Selected applicants will be notified of date and time for personal interview.
