Position Details:

 

MiraCosta College is accepting applications for Community Education Instructors to teach the following not-for-credit classes during Spring 2022:

 

• Dancing at Social Events or Weddings

• DIY Handyman

• Fitness for Active Older Adults

• Guitar

• Microsoft Office Suite for Business Professionals

• Organic Gardening or Farm to Kitchen

• Salsa/Ballroom Dance

• Selling Online (eBay, Etsy, Amazon, etc.)

• Urban Survival Skills

• Wilderness Survival

 

- All classes will be held in person at either the Oceanside Campus, the San Elijo Campus in Cardiff, the Fletcher Cove Community Center in Solana Beach, or the La Colonia Community Center in Solana Beach.

 

- All classes will be held in the evenings or on weekends, except for the “Fitness for Active Older Adults” class which will be during the day.

 

IMPORTANT: MiraCosta College requires that all employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to promote a safe and healthful workplace for employees and to promote the health and safety of our campus community. Unvaccinated employees are at greater risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19 within the workplace and to the college community that depends on college programs and services. Salary Range: To be determined.

 

Compensation: Salary range: $25 – $50 per hour depending on experience, course fee, length of class, and tuition collected. Community Education Instructors do not get paid for time outside the scheduled class time (e.g., curriculum planning) nor for cancelled classes.

 

Employees must make arrangements for the direct deposit of paychecks into the financial institution of their choice, via electronic fund transfer.

 

Benefits:

 

Short-term, temporary employees will be eligible for enrollment in a retirement system and may be eligible for Healthy Families Sick Leave.

If selected as an instructor, you will also be asked to complete a new course proposal form in which you include your class curriculum.

 

Offer of employment to the individuals selected for these positions is contingent upon 1) proof of being fully vaccinated* for COVID-19 or requesting and receiving approval for a medical or religious exemption; 2) submission of a current tuberculosis test clearance; 3) proof of eligibility to work in the United States; 4) fingerprint clearance; and 5) approval by the Board of Trustees.

 

*Individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks or more after they have received the second dose in a 2-dose series (e.g. Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), or two weeks or more after they have received a single-dose vaccine (e.g., Johnson and Johnson [J&J/Janssen).

 

Retired STRS members are not eligible for these positions.

 

Basic Function:

 

Community Education & Workforce Development is looking for qualified individuals who are both industry experts AND natural instructors who want to teach not-for-credit courses .

 

Distinguishing Characteristics:

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

• Teach classes utilizing a variety of instructional delivery methods that include group or individualized instruction as well as computer programs that help students make learning gains. Modify, as necessary, instructional methods to meet diverse student needs. Responsible for effective classroom management that enhances student learning.

• Plan and prepare relevant and practical class lessons, relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

• Complete and maintain appropriate student attendance and evaluation form. Monitor student performance.

 

Other Duties:

 

• Maintain a clean and professional classroom environment.

• Perform a variety of related duties as needed.

 

Knowledge Of:

 

• Adult learner and alternative educational methods and have the ability to apply these methods for adults, teens and multi-cultural students.

• Using computers and related technology.

• Classroom management skills.

• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

• Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the class being taught.

 

Ability To:

 

• Teach students of diverse abilities and backgrounds and overcome barriers to success.

• Build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.

• Relate well to students of different ages and ability levels.

• Communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar and usage.

• Operate a computer.

• Use a variety of audio-visual equipment.

• Function as a team player who can collaborate with colleagues and adapt to flexible schedules.

 

Education & Experience:

 

Instructors must have experience teaching more than 10 students at a time. Must be an expert and passionate about the area selected to teach. Able to develop hands-on projects and curriculum.

 

Instructors must be able to work one-on-one and with small to large groups of students.

 

It is imperative that instructors be professional and ethical at all times.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

• Instructors who are personable, enthusiastic, patient, and who have excellent communication skills.

• Strong desire to work with people from a broad range of backgrounds.

• Enthusiasm for the subject material that will foster a love of learning by students.
