Counselor
Primary Function: The counselor is a professional educator with specialized training in guidance and academics. The counselor assists students to participate actively and as successfully as possible in their educational development and career planning.
Requirements: Knowledge of the educational program requirements of the charter and state graduation credits and requirements, modern office practices and procedures, correct usage of the English language, ability to provide professional guidance services, facilitate activities relating to guidance function, assist students with program changes, registration enrollment and college entrance procedures. Additional knowledge and responsibilities of the Counselor will also include AP Coordinator, AP Audit Coordinator, A-G Course Requirements Submission Coordinator, NCAA Coordinator, Registrar
Records Coordinator, and Work Permits Coordinator. The Counselor must be a multi-tasker; dealing with changing priorities; working with frequent interruptions; working as part of a team; working evening and week-ends as needed. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances and thinking outside of the box. The Counselor is responsible for creating a Master Schedule, Course Selection card and Course Description Booklet, maintaining high school graduation credits and records, ordering and administering a variety of tests; to include, ASVAB, MOCK SAT/ACT, PSAT, and AP Exams.
The Counselor will also provide behavioral and educational counseling to individuals and small groups of students; assist students in understanding and seeking solutions to social, emotional, or academic problems and issues; serve as a resource pertaining to student behavior management strategies, and welfare and attendance problems and concerns; and other related functions as required.
Directly responsible to: Principal
Duties and Responsibilities regarding Graduation
- Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reliable information, and complying with charter, district, county, state, and federal requirements.
- Monitors transcripts, standardized test results, etc., for the purpose of providing information for education and/or career planning, tracking student progress toward graduation and/or ensuring program requirements are met.
- Performs a variety of guidance related activities; enrollment, individual graduation plans, class selection, program changes for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Performs and documents academic files.
- Reviews and analyzes student transcripts for the purpose of ensuing accuracy of data and/or providing information to students and parents.
Duties and Responsibilities regarding written and oral Communication
- Prepares written materials; class schedules, reports, instructions, memos, handouts, flyers, invitations, applications, student history files, letters of recommendation, junior and senior year monthly calendars, etc. for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written support and/or conveying information to students, parents, staff and post-secondary schools.
- Presents information to individual and/or groups of students and parents for the purpose of conveying information regarding career and vocational planning and testing, college admission, scholarships, Cal Grant GPA submission, financial aid, and other related information.
- Processes a variety of documents and materials; grade reports, transcripts, caps and gowns, senior portraits, senior announcements, enrollment, etc. for the purpose of disseminating information in a timely manner.
- Provides information and/or referrals; such as, articulation, matriculation, special programs, school policies, student rights, parent rights, attendance regulations, grading policies, courses, prerequisites, graduation requirements, concurrent enrollment in community college, adult school, ROP, etc. for the purposes of ensuing access to information and/or opportunities related to education and career planning.
- Researches, compiles, and maintains continually changing guidance related information; college scholarships, career information, NCAA Eligibility requirements, college admission, student programs, master schedule, class rosters, for the purpose of providing information to students and parents as requested.
- Liaison to students, parents, and the community regarding internship, community service, and job opportunities for the purpose of providing information to students and parents as requested.
- Attends meetings, conferences, and training sessions for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving updated information and keeping current with changes and modifications to career and post secondary student opportunities.
- Attends recruitment events and meets with prospective families.
Duties and Responsibilities regarding Scheduling
- Assist students and parents for the purpose of making routine scheduling changes and/or assisting students and parents with educational planning.
- Creates the yearly master schedule.
- Organizes a variety of activities: conferences, meetings, school visits, college presentations, senior recognition night, awards, SSTs, financial aid, 504s, military representation for the purpose of providing information and/or enhancing student’s access to educational opportunities.
- Assists in organizing and administering examinations: Advanced Placement Test (AP), Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), Armed Services Vocational Battery (ASVAB), Mock SAT/ACT, etc. for the purpose of monitoring student progress and providing a well managed testing environment.
Employment: 6.75 hours per day
Salary: Classified or Certificated Salary Schedule
Requirements: Valid PPS Credential or equivalent with 5 or more years experience at a high school is preferred.
