Teacher of Educationally Handicapped – Special Day Class
- POSITION DESCRIPTION
To develop skills, attitudes and knowledge in an educational program for pupils certified as Educationally Handicapped and placed in special day classes.
- Major Duties and Responsibilities
- For Children
a) To provide an atmosphere which stimulates the emotional growth of children relative to self-awareness, decision making, responsibility, positive interpersonal relationships, and conflict resolution
b) To comply with Title V and education code regulations governing program planning and evaluation for each Educationally Handicapped child placed in a special day class
c) To provide experiences necessary to ameliorate each child’s learning disability, behavioral disorder and/or emotional disturbance
d) For all Level I special day class teachers to create an atmosphere which emphasizes primarily behavioral and social development
e) For all Level II special day class teachers to create an environment which supports and maintains the child’s feelings of self-worth while exposing him to specific remedial instruction in his area of need
f) To emphasize re-integration for each pupil into the regular school program
- To Parents
a) To communicate with parents on an on-going basis regarding individual pupil progress and need
b) To provide parents with information about the EH program and encourage two-way communication concerning the progress of the child
c) To help parents to seek additional help for themselves and/or their child when this is recognized as desirable

Teacher of Educationally Handicapped – Special Day Class (Major Duties and Responsibilities continued)
- To School/Staff
a) To communicate the nature and purpose of the Educationally Handicapped program to other staff members in the school.
b) To develop specific plans and procedures in conjunction with regular teaching personnel for each child being integrated into the regular school program.
c) To give support and assistance to teachers who will have EH children integrated into their classroom.
d) To perform basic attendance and classroom accounting in accordance with district policy governing EH special day classes.

a) To participate in planning and implementation of district inservice training program for all EH personnel
b) Comply with district policies and participate in formulation of revisions
c) Maintain competence through self-selected professional growth activities
- Other Duties and Responsibilities
a) To provide guidance and supervision for para-professionals working within the classroom

California Elementary Teaching Credential plus experience or special knowledge related to children with learning disabilities, behavioral disorders and/or an emotional disturbance.
