Description of Position
Under the general supervision of the school principal, provides direct counseling services to students to help them meet their educational and personal needs. Works in a team approach with teachers, parents, administrators and other specialists in order to facilitate student motivations and adjustment to school, community and home environment. Helps the administration in planning and operating the total counseling program.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Directly counsels students and their parents.
- Provides guidance services for needed students, including Special Education students with DIS counseling goals.
- Counsels students who are progressing unsatisfactorily in classes.
- Meets with students individually and in small or large groups for the purpose of developing strategies for problem solving, conflict resolution and decision making.
- Conducts human relations and conflict resolution workshops for students and parents.
- Implements the philosophy, goals, policies and objectives of the District as adopted by the Board of Education.
- Assists teachers in using the principles of behavior modification and other useful techniques in the classroom.
- Provides support for establishment and maintenance of non-punitive measures for addressing student behavior.
- Designs and implements strategies to help alleviate the circumstances that cause students to be “at-risk”.
- Works with staff to provide a safe and orderly environment free from fear, violence, drugs, alcohol and other forms of substance abuse.
- Works in a team approach to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
- Provides community resources and consultative assistance to staff members and parents in regard to student needs.
- Provides strategies for students to acquire skills, attitudes and knowledge to learn effectively and employ strategies to achieve success in school.
- Provides strategies for students to acquire skills, attitudes and knowledge that help students understand and respect self and others and use effective interpersonal skills.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Non-Instructional Duties
- Establishes a positive working relationship with parents and members of the school community.
- Keeps information confidential unless disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the counselee or others or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed.
- Maintains professional competencies through participation in in-service education activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
- Supervises student activities and participates in campus supervision.
- Serves as a member of the Student Study team.
- Responds as soon as possible to all crisis situations as identified by the school counselor or administrator.
- Attends IEP meetings for counselees and writes appropriate counseling goals.
- Provides support for the creation of an effective environment for learning.
- Provides information and assistance to parents in their understanding of child development.
- Utilizes the appropriate National Standards for School Counseling Programs as a resource.
Qualifications – Required
Valid CA Pupil Personnel Services Credential authorizing service as a school counselor.
Qualifications – Desired
- Bilingual – English/Spanish
- Knowledge of National Standards for School Counseling Programs
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work collaboratively and effectively with others
- Masters Degree

Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential - School Counselor.
