We are currently recruiting for Sign Language Assistants – Students who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (Instructional Aides) throughout the District. Here, you will have the opportunity to assist by presenting educational materials and exercises related to classroom instruction to students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. The work schedule/calendar for this position is approximately 10 months a year, and 6-6.5 hours per day. The ideal candidate will have: - Experience working in a classroom setting assisting students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing; - An understanding of the unique needs and issues pertinent to students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and the deaf community; - Demonstrated ability to communicate fluently in sign language; - Ability to follow directions given from the teachers and take initiatives when needed. - Flexibility to also provide instructional support in a general education mainstream setting.
Requirements / Qualifications
Education: High-school diploma or equivalent and one of the following. a. Completion of 48 semester units or 72 quarter units from a recognized college or university; OR b. Possession of an associate or higher degree, from a recognized college or university; OR c. Receipt of a passing score on the District Proficiency Test and the Instructional Assistant Test. Experience: One year of experience as an interpreter, instructional aide, or a special education assistant in an education program for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Eight semester units from a recognized college or university in deaf studies including courses in audiology, speech and language, sign language interpretation, and/or transliteration may be substituted for the required experience.
