                                    Print Services Technician

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Print Services Manager perform a wide variety of skilled duties in the print production and reproduction of materials utilizing high speed digital printers; operates other related peripheral print shop equipment; use of graphic design equipment and software; performs production printing and other related duties as assigned.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Oversee and use high speed digital copier equipment, perfect binders, cutters, poster printers, duplicators, duplicator presses.
  • Coordinate and schedule work of digital reproduction equipment to ensure efficient use.
  • Monitor systems for equipment failures or errors.
  • Load equipment with selected materials for operating runs.
  • Adjust and maintain miscellaneous reprographics equipment.
  • Utilize graphics, page layout, illustrations, image editing and other software and equipment.
  • Create text and graphics materials.
  • Work with District staff to develop and design materials to meet digital output.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs to reprographics equipment.
  • Arranges for equipment repairs with service technician and vendors.
  • Operate a variety of finishing equipment to collate, fold, punch, drill, bind, and pad printed materials, staple, tab, laminate, address, perforate, and cut, along with packaging products for shipping and storage.
  • Index and maintain inventory of production printing supplies and materials.
  • Maintain various duplication files.
  • Monitor equipment during the production process.
  • Review originals for quality and efficient reproduction methods.
  • Provide assistance as required to support all District staff in optimizing the use of the technology to accomplish their objectives.
  • Answer telephone calls to assist staff.
  • Reply via email to questions from customers.
  • Drive a motor vehicle for deliveries
  • Assist the specialist in yearbooks and student planner design and production.
  • Process all District bulk mail using specialized software and equipment.
  • Coordinate with Educational Services to produce District-Wide assessments throughout the year.
  • Act as a liaison between Print Services and outside tax supported agencies.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

      Knowledge of:

  • Methods and procedures of ink based and high-speed digital printing process, including finishing and bindery operations.
  • Industry standard software used in graphic and visual communications.
  • Operation and care of printing and related requirement similar to that used by the District.
  • Typical inks and paper stocks used in a full production print shop.
  • Proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Basic provision of copyright laws applicable to the work.
  • Basic Mathematics.
  • Principal, methods and techniques of reprographics and graphic arts.
  • Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including customer needs assessment and meeting quality standards for client services.
  • Clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, modern office procedures and terminology.

      Ability to:

  • Operate and maintain a wide variety of conventional and digital printing and reproduction equipment and computer software used in printing technology including computerized interfaces for printing production equipment.
  • Utilize computers and computer software to assist in the creation of graphics and artwork and develop print layouts in accordance with District standards and customer requirements.
  • Follow and apply safe work practices, methods and procedures in a print shop setting, including proper lifting techniques.
  • Make operation and minor adjustments to equipment.
  • Interact with customers to define print project requirements and expectations and provide advice on design, layout and other project elements.
  • Communicate effective, orally and in writing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Three years experience operating advanced conventional and digital printing and reprographics equipment.  Completion of coursework in graphic communications/layout or design, or a closely related printing technology field is highly desirable.

     LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Class C Drivers License is required
  • Evidence of adequate insurance for motor vehicle which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continues to maintain insurability.
  • Upon acceptance of the District’s offer of employment, new hires may be required to complete a baseline physical examination prior to the first day of employment.
