General Description

 

Under the direction of the CTE Dean and Tulare/Hanford Campus Provost, the CTE Career & Academic Success Coordinator improves student success by working with students to develop an academic engagement plan, set goals, and coordinate resources to achieve their objectives within and beyond the classroom environment. He/she assists students through coordination of work-based learning, advising, career development, and career placement tactics. The successful candidate will work with Career Center personnel and Student Success Coordinators to develop and implement strategies that enhance job search assistance, academic, career and life planning efforts, career coaching, career exploration, and career placement for students enrolled in CTE programs at College of the Sequoias. This includes conducting one-on-one coaching sessions, workshops and seminars, developing handouts and brochures, and facilitating class sessions. The coordinator will work with staff and faculty to design and maintain activities and events to connect students with potential employers for internships and full-time employment. Student interactions and interventions may be one-on-one or group settings. Student success requires a three-point approach whereupon the coordinator, the student, and relevant faculty work together to identify student needs and collaborate through solutions.

 

This position is assigned to the Hanford College Campus, Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. This is a Full-Time, 12-month position.

 

**Effective July 1, the salary range is $69,444 to $92,958. The initial placement is at $69,444.

Job Duties

 

Job duties of the CTE Career & Academic Success Coordinator:

 

• Support the Career Center by developing and maintaining an employer database for work-based-learning opportunities

• Connect students to full-and-part time positions

• Organize career events and activities

• Use technology to facilitate employer-student connection.

• Collect and review alumni employment data to inform continuous improvement.

• Incorporate career activities with other student development and student support service efforts of the College.

• Work with Provosts, Deans, Directors, and Faculty to connect students to academic success and career development.

• Cooperate and collaborate with other college efforts for serving students including the Career Center, Student Success Center, Welcome Center, Access and Ability Center and Work Experience Office.

• The CTE Career & Academic Success Coordinator is expected to engage with students in the classroom, the learning laboratory, and/or other campus locations.

• Engage with employers and attend professional meetings, associations, events, tours, club trips, etc. off of the COS campus with the intent of connecting students and employers.

• Other duties as assigned.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Career Coaching

Facilitate intentional and high impact activities that connect prepare students for a career. Some specific activities might include:

 

• Counsel with students one-on-one about strategies for their job search including self-assessment, exploration, decision-making, job search skills (resume & cover letter writing, interviewing skills, negotiation skills, etc.) and self-directed job search strategies.

• Develop and conduct workshops, seminars or classes relevant to self-assessment, job search skills and job search strategies

• Conduct seminars and presentations in ongoing classes and through student organizations on self-assessment, job search skills and job search strategies

• Work with departments to develop and improve services that complement current departmental activities and goals

 

Academic Coaching

Facilitate intentional and high impact activities that:

 

• Coordinate an academic success program for students while promoting an environment of academic excellence and promoting student success and retention

• Coordinate between instructors, student services staff, counselors, and administrators to enhance the academic success of students

• Through professional development, provide active leadership on current issues and trends related to college students' academic success and retention.

• Facilitate academic success presentations and workshops to various campus partners

 

Employer-Student Connection

Coordinate activities designed to connect students with potential employers. Some specific activities might include:

 

• Coordinate on-campus interview opportunities

• Coordinate with employers and faculty for development of internship, apprenticeship, or other work-based-learning opportunities

• Support career engagement activities and events with Career Center personnel.

• Maintain current employer relationships and a database for managing these contacts

• Manage job postings and perform resume referrals

• As is feasible, directly engage with CTE program advisory committees to collect perspective and understanding of specific workforce needs

• Utilize other technology used to facilitate the company-student connection

• Coordinate feedback from employers and business partners

 

Job Development

Develop and improve employer relationships (particularly of underrepresented majors)

 

• In collaboration with the CTE Dean, utilize, maintain, and modernize an appropriate software system that leverages placement, graduate tracking, labor market information, employer contacts, and job openings.

• Work with and solicit input from departments, faculty, staff, alumni and Career Services to develop new leads for internships, job shadowing, externships and full-time positions.

• Promote career service opportunities

• Visit prospective companies or companies currently recruiting on COS campuses

 

Other

 

• Work with COS Student Success Coordinators to connect students to appropriate support services.

• Serve on appropriate committees related to career development and placement.

• Represent the College at functions as directed by the supervisor

• Assist with other student service activities as directed by the supervisor.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

 

Any combination equivalent to:

 

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and

• Two years of experience. Experience in student development, case management, career services, as well as a background or experience in CTE disciplines including but not limited to public safety, industrial technology, agriculture, healthcare, consumer and family studies, etc.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

• Skill assessing academic difficulties, developing appropriate remedies and evaluating and assessing effectiveness of student support intervention.

• Experience working with under-represented populations and the ability to work successfully with students of diverse backgrounds.

• Organizational skills with the ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple work priorities.

• Outstanding customer service skills.

 

Licenses and Other Requirements:

 

• Valid California driver's license.

• An incumbent must be insurable at the “standard rate” by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification by the College of the Sequoias.
