General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Director of Early Intervention, the Early Intervention Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides services to children birth to age three who are identified with a developmental delay or diagnosed condition. The Early Intervention Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing  provides early intervention strategies and supports in the areas of assessment, instruction, and consultation to staff and families of children age birth to three in natural environments as a primary service provider. The Early Intervention Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing  serves as a liaison with medical and community service providers on behalf of children with disabilities and their families.


Assignment/Location:
This position is full time, 185 day schedule and will serve our Early Intervention program in Clark County. 

 

Essential Functions/Other Functions

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide assessments in all required developmental areas and identified areas of concern as a part of the evaluation team, when needed.
  2. Provide home based education, support and information and training to families with babies and young children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  3. Coach and partner with parents and caregivers by providing information about hearing levels, language development, communication strategies, social responses, educational play, and child development. 
  4. Focus on expanding individual and family language and communication skills by explaining and sharing options (ASL, Listening and Spoken Language) to families considering culture, native language, and communication goals. 
  5. Provide parents with information about deafness, language development, communication options including sign language, family’s activities, communication skills and other related information.
  6. Develop and implement specific goals with measurable outcomes in the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) in conjunction with the IFSP team.
  7. Maintain all Early Intervention documentation including EI state forms and written documentation of all evaluations, goals, outcomes, progress notes and communication with other providers and families.
  8. Ensure compliance with timelines for EI documentation.
  9. Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  10. Ensure the goals of the infant, toddler, and family are met as stated in the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP).
  11. Provide consultation and home programs for the families/caregivers to facilitate goals as identified in the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP).

Other Functions:

  1. Other duties as assigned.
  2. Availability to consult for other disciplines on an as-needed basis.
  3. Attend required meetings.

 

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

 Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Washington teaching certificate with an endorsement in Deaf Education. 
  2. Familiarity with hearing aids and cochlear implants
  3. Experience working with infants and toddlers and IFSPs.
  4. Experience working with families preferably in natural environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in Education of the Deaf, Communication Disorders or Early Childhood
  2. Two years of teaching experience and training in the areas of deaf education, early childhood development, parent counseling, multiple special needs, hearing aid use, cochlear implants, audiology and speech, adaptive equipment.
  3. Experience in the administration and provisions of early childhood special education services.
  4. Experience in serving students in rural or remote districts.

 

Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  1. Travel within the Early Intervention service region (Clark, Pacific, Skamania and Klickitat Counties) 
  2. May be assigned to more than one school building/district.
  3. Physically perform duties of position in addition to the ability to get to a child's level, ability to bend and/or stoop.

Employment Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  2. Driver's license and an acceptable driving abstract.
