Job Summary

Serve as liaison between his or her staff and the Athletic Director. Has a thorough knowledge of the Rules and By-Laws of the California Interscholastic Federation, the League, and the PVUSD as they pertain to his/her sport, including the clearance of all staff members and student-athletes. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by the staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. Delegate’s specific duties, not to include co-head coach designation, supervises implementation, and at season’s end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. Maintains discipline, mediates grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation. Assists/provides the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation needs and requirements for tournaments and special sports events. Assists in the necessary preparation for scheduled home sports contests or practices and adheres to scheduled facility usage times. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment. Provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by his/her presence at all practices, games, while traveling, and when returning from off-campus. Must monitor all athletes on campus following contests until they depart safely. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians. Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary on all levels of the program, and contacts parents when a student is suspended, dropped or becomes ineligible. If your sport conducts “cuts” you as the head coach must personally inform the student that their involvement is no longer needed. Participates in the budgeting process with the Athletic Director by submitting needs for the next season. Recommends/selects equipment and uniforms within budget appropriations. Is accountable

The Pajaro Valley Unified School District annually hires coaches to prepare athletes for competition. Coaches have responsibility for: a. teaching sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tactics; b. conditioning athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agility; c. supervising and conducting practices and contests safely; supervising locker rooms and buses; d. teaching sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic and responsibility to one's team; e. monitoring athletes' school attendance, grades and personal conduct; f. responding to player injuries with approved first aid techniques; g. managing uniforms, equipment and school facilities in a responsible manner; h. provide coverage for absence of coaches.
